The University has been working to raise awareness of and to address gender stereotypes. In this context, it has been decided to give greater linguistic visibility to gender differences. Where, solely for the sake of simplicity, the masculine form is used in this document, it is understood as referring to all individuals who work within the community.

Brief overview of the degree program

The second cycle degree / Master’s program in Global Cultures (GLOC) is a 2-year (120 ECTS credits) open-access degree program with an assessment of personal competencies and skills. The course is entirely taught in English and offers specific courses and support services for enrolled students. Non-EU candidates must also adhere to the terms and procedures for enrolling in Italian universities by contacting Italian embassies/consulates in their respective countries.

RELEVANT DEADLINES

Applications will be assessed by the Admission Board in accordance with the procedure outlined below. Candidates who are not admitted in one intake may apply for other intakes.

INTAKE 1

The first intake is open only to graduate students. In order to be considered for the first intake, candidates must submit their diploma or graduation certificate by April 14th, 2024

INTAKE 2

The second intake is open only to graduate students. In order to be considered for the second intake, candidates must submit their diploma or graduation certificate by June 23rd, 2024

INTAKE 3

SECTION 1 – ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for admission, candidates must:

1. hold a first-cycle QUALIFICATION, i.e., a three-year University degree or diploma or other suitable qualification obtained abroad complying with the requirements set in the Notice of the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) for A.Y. 2024/25 which is published on the website studiare-in-italia.it/studentistranieri/
2. meet the CURRICULAR REQUIREMENTS as outlined in section 1.1;
3. meet the LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS specifically demonstrating proficiency in English at a minimum of the B2 level, as detailed in the procedures outlined in section 1.1.;
4. have their PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS assessed positively following the procedures outlined in section 1.2.

1.1. Curricular and language requirements

CURRICULAR REQUIREMENTS

The present requirement information is conditional upon the ministerial approval.

Prospective students are expected to be familiar with tools, languages, and research methodologies in the humanities. They must also possess a critical perspective and insight into the past and be aware of the dynamic nature of historiography and academic discourse within the broader contexts of time and culture. Students who are familiar with comparative methods, spatial, chronological, and thematic approaches to historiographical research are encouraged to apply. Additionally, students should be able to interact fluently in both spoken and written English

Candidates with an Italian degree must hold a Bachelor's degree in the class L-42 History OR have completed at least 30 ECTS in one or more of the following subject areas:

If the candidate holds a foreign degree, the admission committee evaluates and verifies the possession of knowledge and skills based on the candidate’s prior academic record (see section 1.2)

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

The admission committee will ONLY consider candidates who hold a certificate of English language proficiency at the B2 level (CEFR or equivalent). A list of recognized certificates is available on the webpage: https://corsi.unibo.it/2cycle/GlobalCultures/language-certificate

The English language requirement can also be met by:

• submitting a self-certification confirming that you are a native English speaker;
• providing a bachelor’s or master’s degree with English as the medium of instruction.

1.2 Assessment of personal knowledge and skills

The evaluation of personal knowledge and skills is considered satisfied if the candidate has achieved a final degree score equal to or exceeding 100/110. Candidates who have only the final exam left to complete will be considered to have met the requirements for personal knowledge and skills if their weighted average grade is equal to or exceeds 27.14.

Graduates with a final degree score below 100/110 and candidates who have only the final exam left to complete, with a weighted average grade below 27.14, are ineligible for admission to the program, even if they meet the curricular requirements.

For candidates with a recognized foreign degree, a comprehensive interview in English will be conducted to assess their personal knowledge and skills, focusing on the areas of knowledge required for entry into the master’s degree program.

Candidates holding a bachelor’s degree can apply for both the first and second intakes, as well as the third. Candidates who have not yet graduated can ONLY apply for the third intake.

SECTION 2 – HOW TO APPLY

Applications must be submitted in accordance with the following procedure: 

1. Log onto Studenti OnLine (https://studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm), using your SPID username and password. The system will automatically retrieve your personal details and it will create your university credentials (nome.cognome@studio.unibo.it). International students who do not have an ID document issued in Italy and, therefore, cannot obtain SPID credentials, may log in with their university username and password which can be obtained on https://studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm by clicking on Register and then International students registration;
2. Click on "APPLY FOR ADMISSION", select "SECOND-CYCLE DEGREE" and select the programme named “GLOBAL CULTURES – International master’s degree program, Admission process” (all intake sessions are listed, but you can only select the intake open at the moment of your access);
3. UPLOAD the required documents in PDF format

MANDATORY DOCUMENTS

• For students holding a qualification obtained outside the University of Bologna: please provide a copy of the front and back of a valid identity document. If the identity document is not in Italian or translated English, please attach a copy of your passport.
• For students holding a qualification obtained outside the University of Bologna: Self-certification regarding your first-cycle academic qualification with a list of completed exams, if obtained in Italy, or a copy of the qualification obtained abroad which enables access to second-cycle degree programmes in the country in which it was obtained. This must be submitted along with a transcript of records and a Diploma Supplement, where available, translated into Italian or English. If you have not yet obtained the aforementioned qualification, apply only for the third intake and upload only the list of exams taken or the Transcript of Records.
• Certificate of English language proficiency at the B2 level (CEFR or equivalent) as indicated in section 1.1

• A statement of purpose (stating your interests and personal and professional goals (max 500 words)
• A copy of a valid residence permit, if held.

REMEMBER

• The admission committee will only assess documents uploaded on the online application. Any mandatory documents missing or only partially uploaded by the application deadline shall result in the candidate not being considered (or selected).
• Documents must not be mailed or emailed.
• Students who are about to graduate can also apply if they have only the final exam left to They will be admitted to the degree programme on the condition that they obtain their undergraduate degree by and no later than the date established by the Academic Bodies. Candidates who do not meet this requirement will be excluded from the selection process.

SECTION 3 – ADMISSION

The Admissions Committee will review the academic backgrounds of candidates and assess their eligibility for admission.

The Admissions Committee consists of the following members: Prof. Davide Domenici (Chairman), Prof. Karin Pallaver (Member), and Prof. Marica Tolomelli (Secretary). Other faculty members at GLOC may also serve as substitute members of the committee.

Candidates will receive notifications regarding their admission status to the degree program through Studenti Online (https://studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm) and via email at their institutional email address (name.lastname@studio.unibo.it). Candidates who are not admitted are welcome to reapply for other intakes.

SECTION 4 – ENROLMENT

Upon your admission, you are required to complete the following steps for enrollment:

1. Access the Studenti OnLine portal (https://studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm) using the username and password provided during your application submission.
2. Navigate to the “Enrollment” section, select “Second-cycle Degree,” and choose the specific degree program, “Global Cultures” Enter the necessary details and upload a passport-sized photo of your face in jpg format. Please be aware that providing false information may lead to financial penalties, as stipulated by Article 496 of the Penal Code, and an automatic forfeiture of your enrollment rights, including any previously awarded financial aid. Refunds for any expenses incurred will not be granted.
3. Follow the payment instructions provided on Studenti OnLine (https://studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm) to remit the initial installment for enrollment.

Following your payment, review the particulars of your enrollment application on Studenti OnLine (https://studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm) to verify the subsequent steps and initiate your academic career. Please take note that it is imperative to activate your university career by the annual deadline determined by the Academic Bodies. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of your enrollment.

4.1 Special cases

• If you have a conditional offer, you must obtain your undergraduate degree no later than December 30^th, 2024.
  If you are a University of Bologna graduate, the IT system will automatically update the data concerning graduation after you obtain the qualification.
  If you are graduating from a different institution, check your next steps on Studenti OnLine (https://studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm)

• If you are a non-EU citizen with EU-equivalent status and you have obtained your qualification in Italy you must provide the relevant Student Administration Office with a copy of your residence permit which confirms the EU-equivalent status.

  The documentation which you submitted for admission to the degree programme (e.g. diploma, transcript of records…) must be translated and bear proof of authenticity when applicable https://www.unibo.it/en/study/enrolment-fees-and-other-procedures/degree-programmes/foreign-degree-recognition
  You will need to upload the documents concerning your international qualification on Studenti OnLine (https://studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm) in the section “Calls” by selecting “Matriculation for the 24_25 academic year - document upload for international students with foreign qualifications”.
  When you arrive at the University of Bologna, you will be required to make an appointment with the International Student Administration Office in Bologna or the Student Administration Office of your campus in order to show the original copies of your documentation.

SECTION 5 – TUITION AND FINANCIAL AID

5.1. Tuition fees

Information concerning the amount of tuition fees, financial aid and fee waiver are available on the University website at https://www.unibo.it/en/study/enrolment-fees-and-other-procedures/degree-programmes/tuition-fees-and-exemptions/fees-and-exemptions-amounts-and-deadlines1.

Tuition fees to be paid to enroll in a degree programme consist of a fixed part of € 157.04 and a variable part which is calculated according to the economic situation of the household (ISEE) up to a maximum that varies depending on the degree programme.

Tuition fees are calculated progressively on the basis of a valid ISEE certificate, only if this is submitted in compliance with relevant regulations and within the deadlines, as detailed athttps://www.unibo.it/en/study/enrolment-fees-and-other-procedures/degree-programmes/tuition-fees-and-exemptions/fees-and-exemptions-amounts-and-deadlines1.

If no ISEE certificate is submitted, the maximum tuition envisaged for the degree programme will be applied.

ISEE submission is not linked to the enrolment process. The order in which you carry out the two procedures is irrelevant, as long as you meet the deadlines for each one.

5.2. ER.GO benefits

On a yearly basis, the Regional Authority for the Right to Higher Education – ER.GO publishes calls for grants, accommodation in student residences, meal vouchers and other benefits on the website www.er-go.it.

The procedures to request ER.GO benefits are also independent of the degree programme application and enrolment process.

5.3. Other economic benefits

If you hold a certificate demonstrating recognized invalidity of at least 66% or a certificate complying with Law 104/92, to benefit from the fee waiver, you should send the certificate via email to the relevant Student Administration Office.
