1. ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES AND REQUIREMENTS
In order to enrol in the Master Degree Programme in Environmental Engineering, ERE international curriculum, a Bachelor’s degree is needed (3 or 4 years) before the end of the enrolment period at UniBo (end of December). If students are still concluding their Bachelor programme at the application time, they will receive a "sub-condicio" statement of admission.
See point 4 for specifications on eligibility criteria.
Who might apply:
Students who either hold a Bsc and/or a Msc, or expect to hold one by the end of the enrolment period at UniBo (end of December), in the following topics:
- Environmental Engineering;
- Civil Engineering;
- Chemical Engineering;
- Petroleum Systems Engineering;
- Resources Engineering;
- Biotechnology.

The Commission for the selection of candidates will evaluate the CVs considering both the relevancy of the exams taken during the studies and the working experience.
Anyhow, it is expected that the students should already have a sound background in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and in the basic engineering disciplines, in order to be ready to successfully follow the courses offered in the Master program.
Knowledge of the English language (level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference) is also required, which can be certified by:

  • University of Bologna Linguistic Centre (CLA-UNIBO);
  • Internationally recognised language certifications, such as TOEFL, IELTS, etc. (minimum scores to be considered equivalent to B2 level being the following: IELTS 5,5; TOEFL PBT 507-557; TOEFL CBT 180-217; TOEFL IBT 80-99; Cambridge First Certificate (FCE); Trinity College of London ISE II);
  • Entitled English schools.

Graduates in a degree programme taught in English, English native speakers and graduates in English language and literature or equivalent are exempted from this assessment. The Degree Programme may require students to recover any initial deficit, if their knowledge of the English language is below the B2 level on admission.

For Non-EU citizens, an annual quota of places is set each year by the University of Bologna. For the Master Degree in Environmental Engineering, ERE international curriculum, in the academic year 2017/2018, a maximum of 40 non-EU students will be accepted.

Please note: no entrance exam and Italian proficiency test is required for the ERE Programme.

Eligibility criteria are specified in Section 4.

2. NON EUROPEAN CITIZENS

Non-EU students are foreign citizens from states not belonging to the European Union who are resident abroad at the time of applying for university admission and who are not legally classified as equivalent to Italian/European citizens.

Students with an equivalent status to the EU students (EU-assimilated) are:

  • Citizens from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the Republic of San Marino;
  • non-EU citizens already holding a “residence permit” in Italy (“permesso di soggiorno”) for reasons of subordinate or autonomous work, for family reasons, for political asylum or for religious reasons;
  • non-EU citizens who have been resident in Italy for at least one year and are in possession of a degree obtained in Italy;
  • non-EU citizens who are holders of diplomas from Italian schools abroad or foreign or international schools, working in Italy or abroad, subject to bilateral agreements or special regulations for the recognition of degrees that satisfy the general conditions required for the entry for study;
  • political refugees;
  • staff of foreign diplomatic offices (Embassies/Consulates) as well as International Organizations based in Italy - accredited either at the Italian Government or at the Holy See - along with their family members (husband / wife and children);
  • candidates already holding a valid “permit of stay” for study reasons and are already enroled in a degree course as long as they have regularly been resident in Italy for one year.

All the above mentioned cases are considered equivalent to Italian and EU-citizens, and should apply accordingly.

For non-European citizens resident outside the European Union, the regulations and the deadlines for pre-enrolment will be defined by the Ministry of Education, University and Research, with a communication available here. While waiting for the release of the residence permit, the candidates will be admitted conditionally.

The full procedure to be followed by non-EU citizens is described in Section 3.

3. HOW TO APPLY
In order to keep the quality of the educational environment, admission to the Master Degree Programme is regulated by a selection process that evaluates the applicants’ motivation, academic preparation and language ability. The application for non-EU citizens is carried out through 3 steps.

3.1. Pre-application

This procedure is aimed at releasing an eligibility letter that is necessary for non-EU students as in many countries it is needed to apply for a study Visa for Italy. For EU students, the procedure is anyhow useful to obtain a preliminary evaluation of their eligibility.
The pre-application consists in providing to the Master Degree Board the necessary information to check eligibility.
The following documents are to be submitted with the pre-application:

  • front and back photocopy of your ID card/Passport or other valid identity document;
  • a transcript of records by your Bachelor's University containing a list of the courses with grades (GPA etc.) the name of the final degree and the final grade;
  • documents/certificates stating the personal English skills.
  • Curriculum Vitae, including significant academic/work experiences in the field of the Master Degree.

Additional documents required for non-EU students:

-       A personal statement of motivation (max 1 page);

-       Two recommendation letters.

In order to apply, students need to register to Studenti Online www.studenti.unibo.it, and select the menu “Register for an entrance exam or requirements check”. Download the step-by-step guide to the application.

3.2. Pre-enrolment application at the Italian Embassy for non-EU Students
Non-EU students, while they are applying for the master shall immediately (anyway before the deadline defined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) get in touch with the Italian Embassy or Consulate in their home country and apply to the Pre-enrolment procedure at the University of Bologna, for the given academic year. Application should be made to obtain the “Declaration of Value” (in Italian “Dichiarazione di valore”) and the entry Visa for Study reasons (in Italian: "visto per motivi di studio"). A pre-admission letter may be required from the Embassy; this can be obtained through the pre-application described at the previous Section 3.1 (students are invited to check at the Embassy what documents are required). Attention should be paid at the deadline, which is strictly fixed, usually in June. Students are requested to check the deadline at their Italian Embassy. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions for the instructions to follow if you missed the deadline.

EU-citizens holding a degree obtained in the EU but not in Italy, should be aware that a Declaration of Value is needed in order to enrol in University of Bologna. See http://www.unibo.it/en/teaching/enrolment-transfer-and-final-examination/declaration-of-value

3.2.1. Pre-applications: Deadlines
Applicants will be evaluated on a first-come first-served basis. Therefore, non-EU students are invited to apply as early as possible, starting from January 2017, as their admission is subjected to the number of residual places in the annual quota of places set each year by the Degree Programme (see Section 1).

The early application is also important for non-EU students since they have to pre-enrol through the Italian Embassy-Consulate in their home country; this procedure may take a long time depending on the work load of the Embassy. Please read carefully info and deadlines published here by the Italian Ministry (pre-enrollment's deadline are not available yet).

Early application is also important and for candidates applying for scholarships offered by University of Bologna.

For individual advice on the application and personal requests, applicants can get in contact with our staff at: dicam.didattica@unibo.it

An appointed Admission Board will examine the application forms in several intakes, according to the rules outlined in Section 4, within the following deadlines schedule:

Non-EU students can apply  ONLY if the  positions available for them in the Master's Degree were not fully covered and on condition that they have already submitted their pre-enrolment application to the Italian Embassy/Consulate in their country  within due date.

** The December intake is reserved  to GRADUATING STUDENTS who will hold the Bachelor Degree by December 21st, 2017.

The Application deadline is at 1 p.m. of the closing dates indicated.

4. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

You can find the information about the criteria for the evaluation of the Curriculum Vitae hereunder. If one of the requirements below is not fulfilled, the Board of the Master Degree Programme may admit the student on the basis of an assessment of the whole career.

4.1. Students who earned a bachelor degree in Italy
Students are expected to fulfill curriculum requirements and additional requirements on the adequacy of the academic preparation. If these requirements are not fulfilled, the application can be anyway submitted in order to obtain from the Board of the Master Degree Programme the list of the single courses that are to be attended before enrolment.

The Degree Programme Board, in order to make students fulfil requirements about personal preparation, in providing admission to the Master might also decide to assign obligations in the student’s Study Plan, regarding credits which need to be acquired within the freely chosen learning activities (electives).

Additional information on single course units can be found here (University of Bologna pages).

See the Programme’s regulation for details about curriculum requirements and adequacy of the academic preparation.

4.2. EU and non-EU Students who earned a bachelor degree abroad
The fulfilment of the curriculum requirements and the adequacy of the academic preparation are evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Board of the Master Degree Programme. If a credit/grade conversion (for both course contents and hours) to the Italian system is available, the same requirements for students who earned a bachelor degree in Italy are checked.
