LECTURE: THE COLONIALITY OF THE 5th FRENCH REPUBLIC

28 February 2018

5.00-7.00 pm • Aula PRODI

Françoise Vergès (Le Collège d'études mondiales, Paris)

Rather than closing the chapter on French colonialism, 1962  rather announced a new configuration of the republican space and the coloniality of power. Turning its back on centuries of colonial spatialization (slavery and post-slavery), the promise was of a modern republic and 1968 and its aftermaths seemed to set the stage for a  republic more open to differences.

How did feminist, gay, ecological and leftist movements answered to these new configurations? How did they analyze the colonial and racial questions in their relation to these configurations in a context of new forms of capitalism, the construction of Europe and anti-imperialist struggles? What were their reactions to the emerging demands for the recognition of memories, narratives and representations by racialized groups living in France or in the "overseas" territories and what was the nature of these demands?

Françoise Vergès will explore the theoretical texts, films, novels, and artistic expressions coming from racialized groups as well at the French reactions, looking particularly at the French Women's Liberation Movement.
