NAMIBIAN DOLPHIN PROJECT RESEARCH INTERNSHIP
The Namibian Dolphin Project research internship is a once in a lifetime opportunity for students and enthusiasts to join dedicated scientists who are conducting marine research in a challenging, beautiful and remote environment. See here: Namibian-Dolphin-Project-Internship-advert_20141204.pdf
The PhD projects are fully funded for three years and will be awarded to the best candidates, on a competitive basis. Please note that fees are covered in full only for UK and EU citizens. Non-EU citizens are not necessarily excluded, but in case of success they would need to match the non-EU fee shortfall. Specific queries can be addressed to the listed prospective supervisors. Cetaceans internships announcement and Masters opportunities - Spring 2014
On behalf of the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute (BDRI), I am pleased to announce that we are currently accepting internship applications for Spring term 2014 (a minimum of 60 days of participation from March 2014) for our new research project along the North-western coast of the Iberian Pensinsula (Galician waters, Spain). An incredible diversity of cetaceans is present in these waters. From resident populations of bottlenose dolphins, to harbour porpoises, risso’s dolphins, common dolphins, striped dolphins and pilot whales. And the exiting part is that it is yet to be discovered.
The BDRI offers the interns the chance to work during many steps of the research. Your participation means that you will not only be observing the studied animals at sea, but you will also be collecting different types of data, using various scientific methods, and helping on board the research vessel in general. When back in the lab, you will participate in the transcription of the collected data, with the database work, you will use various software’s, perform photo-identification analysis, use of GIS and more.
During all the work you will be supervised by me, the chief biologist, and other experienced researchers. As an internship, you will be encouraged to work hard and gain an insight of what it is actually like to work as a marine mammal researcher. An academic background in biology or natural science, coupled with motivation, willingness to work hard and interest in marine mammal’s research make the most qualified individuals. Undergraduate and postgraduate students could, as a part of one of BDRI’s projects, present a personal research project as their thesis work. In order to do so, this is requested within your internship application.
The BDRI is a private and self-funded centre, hence, there is no compensation for the internship positions. This means that in order for you to come and take a part of the project you will have to pay for a part of the expenses that are derived from your participation (the internship fee). The fee includes the accommodation, and a small part of other expenses derived of your participation (use of equipment, use of boats). Successful applicants will be responsible for their own transportation expenses to and from the research centre (O Grove, Galicia, Spain).
There is no deadline to apply. However, approved applications are accepted on a first-come, first serve basis. Apply early! Start and end dates are flexible. Positions are open until filled. Prior field research experience is recommended but not required.

Doctoral Fellowships and other assistantships available for entering Ph.D. students in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Louisiana
Our program will be awarding University of Louisiana Fellowships and Board of Regents Fellowships to Ph.D. students entering Spring and Fall 2014. UL Fellows are funded for 3-4 years and have limited teaching responsibilities, while BoR Fellows are funded for 4 years and have no formal teaching duties. Stipends are up to $28,000 per year (plus tuition waiver). Eligibility requirements include US citizenship (or permanent residency) or degree from a US institution. We will also have teaching assistantships available for incoming Ph.D. students. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to directly contact prospective advisors, whose contact information and research interests can be found at our departmental web site (http://biology.ucs.louisiana.edu), which also has a link to our graduate programs (http://biology.ucs.louisiana.edu/content/graduate-programs). The Department of Biology has approximately 75 graduate students and 25 graduate faculty members conducting research on a wide variety of topics.
