TRAINEESHIPS – Economics, Policy Strategy and Banking – DEADLINE: 1 December 2017


 
The Economics, Policy Strategy and Banking (ESB) department of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) is seeking candidates currently studying for a masters' degree or a PhD -as well as postdoctoral candidates- to join our team as trainees. The aim of the traineeships is to provide promising young professionals with an opportunity to understand how the ESM works, while contributing to its mission and pursuing their research interests.
The European Stability Mechanism (“ESM”) is the permanent crisis resolution mechanism for euro area countries. It provides financial assistance to Member States facing financial stability problems, and issues debt instruments to fund this financial support. The ESM is a unique place to work with around 170 individuals committed to making a difference to the future of the euro area. ESM staff comprises professionals from both the private and public sector.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
During a three-to-six-month period, trainees will closely collaborate with ESM colleagues and assist them in their duties or carry out an agreed research project in line with the department’s agenda.
Prospective candidates can apply for an internship in one of the three divisions in the ESB department:
•The Economic and Market Analysis (EMA) Division monitors and analyses macroeconomic and financial market developments in the euro area and globally. Forecasting, fiscal policies, long-term debt sustainability, and bond market structures are particular fields of interest where the team is seeking support.
•The Policy Strategy and Institutional Relations Division works on the ESM’s institutional strategy, instruments and related policies, as well as maintains relations with European and international institutions and Member States. It is also in charge of relations with credit rating agencies. It is, among other topics, deeply engaged in the analysis of further euro area integration, regional financial arrangements, as well as ratings issues.
•The Banking Division monitors and analyses the performance of euro area banks, provides support in the design of financial sector policies and bank restructuring in the context of an adjustment programme and contributes to the evolving framework for banking crisis resolution. Bank analysis and data management, bank restructuring, and the assessment of the regulatory developments on banks business models and profitability are the areas in which the team is seeking support.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
•studying for a Master’s Degree in Economics or Finance. PhD students must be within one or two years before completing a Ph.D. and be in active student status.
•postdoctoral candidates who have recently completed their PhD.
KEY COMPETENCIES
To be eligible for an ESM traineeship, candidates must:
•have an excellent command of English, written and oral.
•possess strong analytical, quantitative and computer skills.
