Student profile
Daniel Minawi
Graduate Student in Civil Engineering (Structural Concentration) at Polytechnic Institute of New York University.

From January 2012 is Teacher Assistant of Professor Lawrence Chiarelli, Head of the Civil Engineering Department of NYU.

I started in 2009 the first year of the International Master in Civil Engineering (Laurea Magistrale Internazionale) at University of Bologna. Since the beginning we have been introduced to a lot of international programs to complete our study abroad. For example the Dual Degree with Columbia University, the Master of Science at Polytechnic Institute of New York University, and the possibility to study for our thesis in many international universities like UCSD, University of Canterbury in New Zeland, Southampton in Great Britain, and many more..

The Master is organized in a way to prepare the students to the American system of education with more individual work during the semester instead of a big final exam that cover all the program. In this way I practiced with the in-class presentations, team working, homeworks, and individual assignments. Another important aspect of the teaching system is to transmit to the students all the technical vocabulary which is fundamental for when you will speak with other students and professors from other countries.
I chose to follow both the two years of the Master program in Bologna before leaving to New York on summer 2011. My goal was to get another Master of Science in Civil Engineering at NYU-Poly in a way to have a good preparation and knowledge of the American codes to start a work experience in the United States. The preparation received from my Bachelor and especially from the two years of my International Master in Bologna helped me a lot in my studies here in New York. I was well prepared with the technical English and with the American system of education. At NYU-Poly I chose courses mainly in the structural concentration that I didn’t take in Italy, for example Bridge Engineering the same course for which I am now finishing to develop my Thesis that I will discuss in Italy to complete my International Master program in Bologna.
After one semester the students here are allowed to work in the University and it’s a great opportunity to meet new professors and have a job experience in the academic field that prepares you to the job environment. In January I have been selected as a Teacher Assistant and now I am still working with Professor Lawrence Chiarelli, Head of the Civil Engineering Department of NYU. It’s a great experience and something definitely good to write on your resume. Finishing the Master in one year and working at the same time takes a lot of time and energy but is at the same time a beautiful experience and a personal satisfaction.
New York City is not always an easy city because it’s expensive, chaotic and huge! But after you start getting the right rhythm you will discover that it’s a perfect place where to live and there are so many interesting things to see here, now I couldn’t imagine to live without all the services and entertainments that NYC has to offer!
