Additional information on single course units at the University of Bologna

Detailed information on single course units at the University of Bologna can be found here.

Anyone in possession of a qualification that offers access to the degree programme for which the learning activities are running can enrol in single course units.

Admission to single course units is established by the Degree Programme Board, according to organisational, managerial and cultural assessments.

For degree programmes with restricted access there may be a limit to the number of students admitted to single course units. There may also be special arrangements for access to single course units for programmes with free access, according to exceptional teaching or structural requirements.

Enrolment to single course units is valid for one academic year only. Courses may run in periods other than the academic year. Before enrolling, check that the lessons are still to be held.

Please note: by enrolling at single course units you are NOT enrolled at a master degree or degree programme: you are just enrolled to single subjects for the duration on one year only. You may attend the exam which, if passed, allows you to obtain a certificate from the University that you passed a single course unit. It might be useful if for some reasons you need to consolidate your background, or anticipate some subjects of a degree programme before enrolling.

Why one may need to attend single course units

Students usually have two main motivations to attend single course units.

  1. If your academic background does not meet the requirements for accessing a given master degree programme, you may wish to integrate it by taking single course units. Usually the master degree board may provide useful suggestions to you to identify which course units you need to attend. These units can be taken at your home University, or you may choose to take them at The University of Bologna. The advantage in taking them in Bologna is that you may get settled down in Bologna in advance with respect to the beginning of the master programme. Moreover, if you are an international student with Visa requirements, the bureaucracy for obtaining the Visa can be solved when you are already resident in Italy, therefore making the whole procedure simpler. However, you need to obtain a temporary Visa to attend the single course units (you may require an admission letter written by the master degree board).
  2. If you missed the deadline for enrolling to a master degree programme, you may evaluate the opportunity to enroll at single subjects at the University of Bologna. This might be useful in order to take specific subjects (single courses) at the University of Bologna therefore saving time while you are attending the official beginning of the Master Degree programme. Students should note that, by enrolling at single courses, they are not enrolled at the master. They are enrolled at the single course units only, for a duration of one year only, while waiting for the master degree programme to start. The course units that were attended by the Student (by passing the exam) would be recognised later on, when enrolling at the master degree programme.
Students typically choose this option if they decide to enroll at the master degree programme at the University of Bologna after June, namely, after the deadline for pre-enrollment at the Embassy is passed. Therefore, they may apply to single course units in either the fall (deadline for application is around the end of August) or spring semester (deadline for application is around the end of the year). In this way students may save time while they attend to be officially enrolled and start the master degree programme in September next year.
Enrollment at single course units follows the same steps as for the master degree programme (application and pre-enrollment at the Embassy) with more flexible deadlines: typically, Embassies fix a deadline at the end of August for the courses taken in the first semester, and a deadline at the end for December for the courses of the second semester.
