Students enrolled on the Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering can study, carry out an internship, or write their thesis abroad through several different routes.
This page explains the common steps across all of them, for the exact procedures and deadlines of each programme, always check the linked webpages.
Experiences abroad: possible options
- Erasmus+ programme for Study: Attend courses at a partner university in Europe for one or two semesters, with recognised credits on return.
- Internship Abroad: You can do an internship abroad by choosing from one of the following options:
- Erasmus+ programme for Traineeship: a funded internship at a company, research centre or university in an EU country.
- Find a company or institution abroad: if you choose this route, the procedure is the same as for an internship in Italy: you have to find an academic tutor and a company. The activity will be tracked and insurance is provided through the internship agreement.
- Overseas programme: a study exchange at a partner university outside the EU. University-funded rather than EU-funded.
- Research period abroad: carrying out a research period abroad aimed at preparing your final thesis at a foreign university, research lab or company, arranged directly with your supervisor and the hosting organisation. Study grants are available through two dedicated calls each year, one in springtime and one in fall.
- Double Degree programme with KTH, Sweden: a one-year integrated mobility leading to two degrees; selected through the Erasmus+ Study call, with an additional interview.
- Other programmes managed by consortiums, research institutes or private organisations.
The common workflow
- Decide what you want to do and when. Study mobility programmes (Erasmus+ or Overseas), calls for research period abroad, and the double degree programme all have different eligibility windows.
- Check the language requirement for your target destination and other mandatory requirements.
- Submit your application through the relevant platform (see table below) before the deadline of the specific call. If you organize an internship abroad outside the programmes mentioned above there are no specific deadlines, but you still require formal approval (for insurance and correct tracking of the activity) before you leave.
- Wait for the outcome (rankings for Erasmus+/Overseas; internship office + host approval for a thesis).
- Formalise the agreement: Learning Agreement (study, internship or thesis abroad), Traineeship Agreement (internship), before departure. Retroactive changes are not accepted, so get this right up front.
- Handle pre-departure logistics: insurance, visa/residence permit if required, host-institution registration and any other aspects related to the specific mobility you chose. Each programme has generally a detailed guideline about what to do before, during and after the mobility. Check them carefully.
- While abroad, keep every document the host institution gives you (transcript, attendance certificate, supervisor evaluation): you'll need them for recognition upon your return.
- At the end of the mobility, submit your documentation and request formal recognition of credits from the Course Council. You cannot graduate before this is completed.
