Internships

The curricular internship is a training experience, included in the study plan of the degree programme, aimed at completing academic education through practical experiences.

What is an internship

The internship activity is an experience planned to complete your academic education with practical work at companies, public offices or labs within the University of Bologna.

Types of internships included in your Degree Programme

You can choose one of the following internships:

  • Internship I to acquire 12 credits for 300 hours to be selected among the electives
  • Internship II – RAship to acquire 12 for 300 hours to be selected among the electives

Internship I - outside Unibo (300 hours – 12 CFU Internship): it can be carried out in private companies, public institutions, professional firms etc, either in Italy or abroad. The curricular internship can also be used to prepare the final exam or be added to the internship in preparation for the final exam in case you want to do both at the same company/ institution.

Internship II - within Unibo(300 hours – 12 CFU Internship): Two types of internship are possible in this case: (i) in laboratories, research centres and admin offices of Unibo, carrying out tasks supporting their activities; (ii) acting as a Research Assistant of a faculty member of CLAMSEI (or of another member of the Department of Statistics of the University of Bologna). In this case the internship is called RAship and can be finalized conditionally on a self-arranged agreement with a member of the Department of Statistics. This opportunity is strongly suggested to students considering the possibility to apply for a PhD in Statistics or if you are interested to continue in a professional path more dedicated to research. NB. The RAship project cannot coincide with the thesis project.

The advisor for RAship Internship is Dr. Matteo Farnè (matteo.farne@unibo.it) to which you can turn for help in finding a project and a supervisor. The internship tutor is in any case Prof. Michele Scagliarini.

You can also add to your study plan one of the following internships (the course suggests to set up one of these internship during the second semester of the second year):

  • Internship for the preparation of the final dissertation (300 hours - 12 credits)
  • Internship for the preparation abroad of the final dissertation (300 hours - 12 credits)

Carrying out an internship for the preparation of the final examination, in Italy or abroad, allows you to gain 12 of the 16 credits associated with your dissertation. The aim of such internship has to be consistent with the dissertation topic and agreed with the supervisor.

In this case, once agreed the topic of your dissertation with your supervisor, you can ask the Internship office to add the internship to you career (you can send your request anytime, despite the 2 periods scheduled to change your study plan) sending to the internship office the form you find attached.

When can you apply

You can set up your internship from the second semester of the first year and/or  during the second year, after selecting it in your study plan (please read the information on how to modify the study plan) .

Commission Board/Academic Tutor: Prof. Michele Scagliarini
