Preparing the study plan

Information on how to prepare and present a study plan.

WHAT IS A STUDY PLAN?

The study plan is the complete set of exams that you need to sit in order to graduate. Some exams are compulsory while others are elective. Since the 1st year of LMEPP curr PAE and curr HEMAP, you are required to make some choices and fill in your individual study plan on Studenti Online. Your study plan needs to be filled and submitted within certain periods in the year, and anyway before sitting the exams.

To fill in your study plan, you will have to be in line with your tuition fees payments and, if you are a non-EU citizen, to hold a valid residence permit.

HOW AND WHEN

You can complete and amend your study plan on Studenti Online during the following two periods of the academic year 2024/2025

1st period:  from 30th September to 20th October 2024

- from the 2nd to the 12th of December 2024 exclusively for those 1st year students enrolled on a conditional basis

2nd period:
 from 14th January to 21st February 2025

It is possible to edit your Study Plan by adding or deleting courses in the two periods indicated. Please make sure that all the courses/teaching activities you are going to be marked for are actually included in your online study plan.

No exceptions to these intervals are possible.

Following expiry of the deadlines, the last study plan presented will be deemed valid and no further amendments will be possible.

WHAT ARE MY CHOICES

Curr. HEMAP - Health Economics, Management and Policy

1st YEAR

Most of the courses are mandatory, so you will find them automatically in your study plan. You only have to update your study plan by choosing

CRASH COURSE

B1076 INTRODUCTORY ECONOMICS (3 ECTS that will be considered extra credits)

6 ECTS among the following:

98352    HEALTH INEQUALITY OVER THE LIFE CYCLE: MEASUREMENT AND POLICIES

87421    ECONOMIC EVALUATION AND HEALTH

12 ECTS  between the following:

B3134 HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH AND HUMAN RESOURCES

B3133 REGULATION IN HEALTHCARE INSURANCE AND MARKETS

5 ECTS

B2045   WORKSHOP: THE LABOR MARKET IN THE HEALTHCARE SECTOR

You can start your internship 2 (6 cfu) at the end of your first year, therefore you can add it in your study plan (you can do that during the second opening of the study plan).

2nd YEAR

PLEASE NOTE
- if you are planning to graduate in the 2024/25 academic year, that is within March 2026, you cannot edit your Study Plan in the a.y. 2025/26 (that is in October 2025). If you do, you will not be allowed to graduate within March 2026.

- it is NOT allowed to take exams of elective courses before the academic year in which these activities are planned in your course plan;
- it is NOT possible to fill in the Study Plan outside the two above mentioned periods.

In the 2nd year you have mandatory courses as well as electives.

You have four groups of choices:

1. One among the following (6 ECTS):

79076   Economics of the Biopharmaceutical Industry
79077   Health economics and policy in low and middle income countries
70138   Lifestyles and health outcomes

2. One among the following (4 ECTS)

79079    Internship*
79078    Workshop: building empirical case studies in health economics

ELECTIVES COURSES suggested by the programme (6 ECTS)

79076    Topics in Global Health
81796    Internship 2*
70126    Health systems

or one of the following courses if not previously selected:

79076   Economics of the Biopharmaceutical Industry
79077   Health economics and policy in low and middle income countries
70138   Lifestyles and health outcomes

or any course which is held in English and is available in the University of Bologna.

Please note:

  • only courses from open-access degree programmes (a numero aperto) can be selected.
  • you will need these non-HEMAP choices to be approved before actually taking them. We recommend you insert sensible options, consistent with HEMAP, from L or LM taught in English. The request will be evaluated by the Programme Director and Board, then, if approved, added to your SOL records online.
  • You are not bound to take all the modules that you select, BUT, the optional/elective exams that you will actually take in the end, will have to be selected in your study plan. The same applies to internships.

*If you wish to do an Internship, you can choose a 100 hours internship (4 ECTS) or a 150 hours internship (6 ECTS). You can also choose to do a 250 hours internship (6 ECTS + 4 ECTS), by adding both activities to you study plan. Please note: even if the Internship 1 and Internship 2 are indicated in "Period 1" you can have it whenever you want.

Outgoing Erasmus/Overseas (or other exchanges)

The Learning Agreement replaces the study plan in your period abroad and you can state your optional and elective choices on the L.A. For the optional and elective choices that you do not include in your L.A., you need to include them in the study plan within the set deadlines.

However, if you are leaving for an exchange period, it may be wise to fill in the study plan anyway as if you were in Bologna. Why? If, for example, you do not manage to sit abroad all the exams that you had planned in your L.A., having optionals / electives selected in your s.p. is a safer fall-back option if you what to take them in Bologna on your return. If they are not selected, you cannot take them when you come back.

Essentially, everything that is not a mandatory module needs to be duly selected, be it in the final version of the Learning Agreement or in the Study Plan, or both to be on the safe side.

For the internship for the preparation of the final examination, read the instruction on this page.

WHAT ARE MY CHOICES

curr. PAE - Policy Analysis and Evaluation

1st YEAR

Most of the courses are mandatory (please, refer to the Course Structure Diagram), so they will appear automatically in your study plan.

In addition to the mandatory courses , in your first year you are required to choose 6 CFU from the Law for Public Policy subject group (either Diritto delle Amministrazioni Pubbliche or Public Economic Law), and 6 CFU in the Open Source Programming subject group (either Python for Economists or R for Economists).

You can also select the CRASH COURSES, Introductory Economics and Introductory Statistics, and their corresponding credits (3 CFU each) will be counted as extra credits.

2nd YEAR

PLEASE NOTE

- if you are planning to graduate in the 2024/25 academic year, that is within March 2026, you cannot edit your Study Plan in the a.y. 2025/26 (that is in October 2025). If you do, you will not be allowed to graduate within March 2026.- it is NOT allowed to take exams of elective courses before the academic year in which these activities are planned in your course plan;

- it is NOT possible to fill in the Study Plan outside the two periods mentioned above.

In the 2nd year you have one mandatory learning activity and various optional activities (please, always refer to the Course Structure Diagram).

In particular

  • in group 2. "Econometrics for Public Policy", you are required to choose one (6CFU) amongst the two available learning activities
  • in group 3. "Economics and Public Policy" you are expected to choose three learning activities (in total 18 CFU).
  • Additionally, to earn further 3 CFU, you have to choose one of the learning activities listed in group 4.

The minimum number of credits to spend in electives is 12, but you can add more if you wish (though no more than 24 extra, therefore up to 36 CFU). All exam grades, including those from modules exceeding the mandatory elective 12 CFU, will average up and count for the final grade.

APPROVAL OF YOUR STUDY PLAN

If you select elective subjects from among those offered by the degree programme, there is no need for assessment and your plan is approved automatically and input to your career file.

On the other hand, if you want to choose exams not specifically offered by your degree programme, approval or otherwise will be decided by the Degree Programme Board.
