Curricular Internships

Curricular internships are learning activities that allow students to obtain credits contemplated in the course structure diagram of their degree programme, which also allow to acquire practical skills and make initial contact with the world of work.

Internships are carried out on the basis of an agreement between the University of Bologna and the host structure (company, public body, professional firm etc.) and an internship programme signed by the parties concerned.

Who is eligible

Students are eligible for internships, which must be carried out as part of their degree programme. For this Degree Programme, the Curricular Internship is an optional learning activity.

Unless otherwise established by national or European regulations, internships normally have a duration of 25 hours for every University educational credit assigned to them in the course structure diagram for the degree programme. Internships must be completed within 12 months of their start date.

Verify in the study plan the number of hours foreseen for the curricular internship.

Once you have included the internship in your study plan, you can carry it out in any period of the year.

How to choose the Company

Internships may be carried out in University structures or externally, either in Italy or abroad.
To choose where to carry out the internship, you can consult the list of structures that hold agreements with the University and/or internship offers already published on Tirocini online.
If none of the offers meet your interest, you can present a spontaneous application and, if approved, ask the Structure to publish an offer addressed to you (known as “ad personam” offer), via the University's internship application.  If the Host Structure does not already have an agreement with the University, an agreement may be stipulated and, once it has been stipulated, the internship can start.

Any requests of agreement from commercial activities (shops) will not be considered (Degree Programme Board Council resolution of 30/01/2020).

A handbook with further details is available in the attachment box ("Manuale tirocinanti").

How to activate an internship

Students can request an internship solely via the Tirocini online application.
Once you enter this application, you will find a menu (on the left) with two options: "Offerte" ("Offers") and "Aziende" ("Companies").

Once you have identified the structure in which you wish to carry out the internship, you need to agree with the Host Contact Person your learning objectives and activities, the time lines to achieve them and all the other details required to complete the internship programme.

Once all internship details have been defined, you will be able to submit your internship application online.

ATTENTION - only in case you presented a spontaneous application ("autocandidatura"): Only after the hosting structure will have filled in the internship programme and accepted your request, you will receive an e-mail in which you will be asked to accept, refuse or ask for modifications of the suggested internship programme.

Only after the hosting institution will have filled in the internship programme and accepted your internship request, the presentation of your internship request can be considered as concluded and can then be submitted to the Internship Committee.

Approval of the internship

Applications will be submitted to the competent Internship Committee, which must authorise their activation.

After the approval by the Internship Committee, you will be able to download the internship programme, sign it, get the signature of the hosting institution's tutor and then upload it together with a copy of the identity card of the hosting institution's tutor/referee.

The internship can start only after the Internship Office of Rimini Campus will have validated the internship programme.

Students must download their attendance register before commencing their Internship.

The Internship can be carried out in the period in between the start and end dates shown on the attendance register.

During the internship

During the internship, you must keep in contact with your University Tutor (Prof. Roy Menarini) and send him an e-mail after having completed the first half of the internship hours, to communicate to him the activities which you have carried out so far. You can also refer to your University Tutor for any support or advice you may need on how to carry out your activities. You also must record your daily activities in the attendance register.
The Internship hours must be recorded during the period between the start and end dates shown on the attendance register.
In case if, to complete the hours foreseen for your internship, it should be necessary to extend the internship period, you will need to present the internship extension form ("proroga") before the foreseen internship end. You can find this form ("modulo di proroga") in the attachment box. Please send it by e-mail to or by fax to 0541-434193 to the Internship Office of Rimini Campus.

Before leaving the Host Structure, make sure that the attendance register is countersigned by the Host Contact Person.

Withdrawal, interruption, suspension

If you intend to withdraw from or interrupt your internship for reasons that do not allow further continuation, you must notify the office below, stating your reasons to Internship office by e-mail:

What to do at the end of the internship

After having concluded the internship, for the approval and verbalisation on behalf of the Intership Committee it will be necessary to:

  • Insert the effective end date of the internship in the database;
  • Upload the attendance register completed with stamp and signatures;
  • Complete the evaluation questionnaire;
  • The hosting institution also needs to complete an evaluation questionnaire before approval and verbalisation.

The attendance register and the evaluation questionnaire must be uploaded and completed at least 5 days before the verbalisation dates here below.

The verbalisation will be done directly by the Internship Office without the presence of the students.

The next Internship Committee's verbalisation dates for concluded internships are:

                                                        10 December 2020 at 10:00 AM

                                                         12 February 2021 at 10:00 AM

                                                         13 April 2021 at 10:00 AM

                                                         09 June 2021 at 10:00 AM

ATTENTION: the teaching activities will be suspended during the month of August. Therefore, all the students who need to validate the internship within a certain deadline (graduating students, scholarship holders, etc.) MUST organise their internship accordingly, and enquire at the Internship Office IN ADVANCE regarding the dates already set by the Committee for its meetings.

Request for recognition of work carried out during the internship

If the degree programme teaching regulations allow it, you may request the recognition of a work activity (or an activity comparable to it) that you carried out during the internship

  • after including the internship in the study plan;

  • after completing the activity in question (in Italy or abroad);

  • regardless of whether or not an internship agreement already exists between the Host Structure and the University of Bologna.

The student can ask for internship recognition in the following cases:
- if the student can demonstrate to have been employed in a working activity (temporary or permanent contract, project work or apprenticeship), with exclusion of autonomous/freelance activities.

For the internship recognition request, it is necessary to complete and present a form (see attachment box) and hand it in in original to the Intership Office on Rimini Campus together with the required attachments (the company's presentation form must be completed by the company).

To be eligible for recognition, the working activities need to be coherent with the didactic aims of the degree programme and must not date back more than 2 years antecedent to the date of enrollment.

Working experiences regarding (also partially) activities as "shop assistant", will be excluded a priori from recognition.

After checking the admissibility of the request and the completeness of the documentation, the Degree Programme's Board will express a favourable or adverse opinion.
In case of favourable evaluation, the student will see the recognition (RC) of the internship in their study plan.

- if the student has concluded a national civilian service period.
To be eligible for recognition, the national civilian service needs to be coherent to the didactic aims of the degree programme and its duration needs to be at least equal to the internship hours required.

The student interested in submitting a request for recognition of a national civilian service period needs to present the completed documents (see attachment box) to the Internship Office, enclosing the required documentation.

In case of positive evaluation by the Degree Programme's Board, the student will see the recognition (RC) of the internship in the study plan.

Insurance cover

 The University of Bologna guarantees insurance cover for students against accidents at work and third-party liability claims. These policies are written by insurance companies that specialise in the sector.
In the event of travel to locations or structures not indicated in the approved curricula internship programme, you can request an extension of the insurance cover - even during the internship - on condition that the travel concerned is consistent with the objectives of the internship.

Online courses on health and safety are compulsory for all students.
