Since Russia’s war of aggression on Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the desire to decolonise knowledge about Ukraine and about East Central Europe as a whole has gained momentum. To understand the paths of (de)colonisation taken by East Central and Eastern Europe is a complex task. The colonial and decolonial dynamics shaping the history of this region since the late 18th century until today are the object of global, transnational, transregional and local struggles. The aim of this seminar is to understand the role of Eastern Europe as both the coloniser and the colonised. By placing the countries and cultures of Eastern Europe within the global history of colonialism, anti-colonialism and decolonization, we will reflect upon the changing interpretations and competing narratives about the past.
