GENDER, MODERNITY AND NATIONAL IDENTITIES

Cecilia Tossounian (Universidad de San Andrés)

from 27 November 2018 at 17:00 to 30 November 2018 at 19:00

Aula SPECOLA – Piazza San Giovanni in Monte, 2 – Bologna, Italy

This course is based on diverse theoretical and historiographical approaches to concepts such as modernity, gender and nationalism with the aim of exploring the ways in which modern femininities (and masculinities) encapsulated multiple concerns on national identities. In many parts of the world, the experience of modernity was refracted, in part, by concerns about the role of women in changing social, political and economic situations. Women could display both the positive and negative aspects of modernity. Likewise, in many societies, attitudes towards modernity were related to debates on nationalisms and national identities, topics that also gave an important role to women as emblems of the national. The course aims to investigate these issues from a Latin American perspective and through the lens of popular culture.
