Aula SPECOLA – Piazza San Giovanni in Monte, 2 – Bologna, Italy

Cultural Heritage is a tangible or intangible expression of our ways of living. It can be inherited and passed down from previous generations to the next.

This seminar is an interactive path through basic theoretical stand points in cultural heritage studies focusing on the current developments and threats.

Students will be first introduced to the key concepts, players (including UNESCO and ICOM) and current challenges for understanding the cultural heritage. The remarkable growth of the social media and their impact on our perception of the past will be critically explored through relevant case studies.

From the Bamiyan Buddhas and the sacred monastery of Mes Aynak to the 2003 catastrophic looting and destruction of the Iraq Museum of Baghdad, different types of threats affecting cultural heritage globally will be analyzed.

Students will be encouraged to critically read the papers assigned which will be discussed during the lectures. An introduction to open-access software including Google Earth Pro an online platforms will be also proposed to learn how to map, document and share information about archaeological sites and monuments.
