Application procedure A.Y. 2022/2023
Admission to the 2nd cycle degree programme is subject to the possession of a 1st cycle degree or other suitable qualification obtained abroad (granting access to Second Cycle Degree programmes in the country of issue) and to the assessment of personal preparation through the analysis of his/her curriculum and the other required documents.
Knowledge of the English language (level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference) is also required, to be certified according to the criteria outlined in the paragraph Assessment of English language requirements.
Those who have not graduated yet can submit their application as well. Graduating students will be allowed to apply and enroll under condition of receiving their bachelor degree (first cycle degree) by a certain deadline, that will be set by the Academic bodies and will be indicated later in the degree website.
Deadlines and online procedures
To be admitted to the degree programme students must apply only online through the Studenti online platform (switch the language into English) by uploading all necessary documents required (passport/identity document, Copy of a first cycle/Bachelor’s degree and/or Transcript of Records, Curriculum vitae et studiorum, cover letter, English Language Proficiency Assessment).

Only complete applications will be assessed by the Admission Board.
Timely applications are highly recommended, especially for non-EU students, because eligible Applicants must apply for an entry visa for study purposes at the Italian Embassy in your country and pre-enrol online via the Universitaly portal.

- pre-enrolment procedure at the Italian Embassy does not grant enrolment to the programme. Your official enrolment will be subject to verification of the authenticity, the accreditation, the level and the academic rights of the qualifications by the Student Administration Office of the University of Bologna, once the original documents have been received.

Curricular requirements
Admission to the 2nd cycle degree programme is also subject to the possession of some curricular requirements.
The candidate should have obtained at least 60 ECTS in basic scientific learnings, 20 ECTS of which in chemistry (Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors CHIM/01 to CHIM/12, BIO/10 - BIO/11, ING-IND/22 to ING-IND/27 for courses in 1st cycle Italian Degrees)
A good basic knowledge of physical chemistry is also required: this knowledge will be evaluated mainly on the basis of the study curriculum (1st cycle or Italian five-year degree programmes) and on the contents of the learning activities.
Assessment of personal preparation
Along with the above-mentioned curricular requirements, admission to the Master's Degree programme is in any case subject to the assessment of personal preparation.
The procedure is carried out by a specific Admission Board through the evaluation of candidates’ uploaded documents.
The Admission Board may decide to carry out additional interviews, on an individual basis, by contacting candidates directly.
Assessment of English language requirements
The English language proficiency at CEFR B2 level is required for the admission to the degree programme.
Candidates meet the requirements by providing one of the following certifications:
- an international certificate at B2 level among the ones listed in the document published on this page (file name: Tabella certificazioni equipollenti prova idoneità linguistica at the bottom page);
- a first/second cycle degree title in programmes entirely taught in English: the Transcript of records or other documents issued by the University must contain the formal indication that the language of instruction is English;
- Transcript of records demonstrating a CEFR English B2 exam passed during the first/second cycle programme: valid only if the level of proficiency is clearly stated in the course title (ex: English B2/ Idoneità linguistica di lingua inglese B2, etc.). If the level is not clearly indicated in the course title, a declaration of the level issued by the Professor in charge of the completed course is required;
- status of English native speakers.
- Transcript of records demonstrating at least 1 year of a degree programme entirely taught in English: the Transcript of records or other documents issued by the University must contain the formal indication that the language of instruction is English;
- CEFR English B2 certification provided by any Italian University Language Center (CLA) or any other recognized certifying body (valid only if the certificate states the exact name of the body/school/institute issuing the certificate, level obtained and exam date);
- Sit an online Oxford English proficiency test provided by UNIBO CLA and get a result no lower than CEFR English B2. The test can be sat ONCE ONLY in one of the set dates.
