Final grade calculation

Instructions on how to calculate the final grade for graduation.

At the end of their study path, students are admitted to their final exam, consisting in the public defense of their Thesis to the Graduation Board.

The Board expresses its assessment with a grade out of one hundred and ten. The exam is deemed to be passed with a minimum grade of 66/110 and a maximum grade of 110/110.

Such final grade is the result of the starting grade + the extra points + score for the Thesis work.

Starting grade

The starting grade is the mathematical average of all of your exam marks weighted on the corresponding credits (ECTS), converted into a mark in the 66-110 scale. Courses and activities in your records that are not graded, that is those assessed on a pass/fail basis, such as internships or “idoneità”, do not contribute to the starting grade. This file may help you calculate your grade, however, this is not to be intended as an official tool: it is the Registrar’s Office and the Student Administration Office who will provide official and complete information.

Extra points

A number of extra points may be added to your starting grade:

  • 0.1 points are added for every exam (6 ECTS) passed with honours (30 e lode). If the number of ECTS for that exam is different, the bonus points are rescaled accordingly;
  • bonus points will be awarded if you graduate on time (“in corso”), depending on your graduation session:
    • 2 points if you graduate in the Summer session (June and July);
    • 1.5 points if you graduate in the Autumn session (September to December);
    • 1 point if you graduate in the Winter session (January to March).

Score for the Thesis work

A maximum of 37.5 points may be awarded to the final Thesis work:

  • grade assigned by the Supervisor to the thesis work, ranging from 0 to 15;
  • grade assigned by the Opponent (controrelatore) to the thesis work, ranging from 0 to 15;
  • grade assigned by the Graduation Board, ranging from 0 to 7.5.

The 'cum laude' honor may be awarded by unanimous decision of the Graduation Board only if the following requests are both satisfied:

  • the sum of the starting grade + the extra points exceeds 73.5;
  • the score for the Thesis work is maximum (37.5).

The final mark will be rounded to the nearest integer.

ONLY FOR STUDENTS ENROLLED ON A.Y. 2018/19

The final grade is calculated by converting into a 110 scale the following data:

- the weighted average of the obtained marks proportional to the number of ECTS completed (i.e. 72/108)

- the final thesis mark calculated on the basis of the mark average (on a 30 scale + 'cum laude' award) assigned by the supervisor, the so-called 'Controrelatore' and the Graduation Board, proportional to the relevant ECTS (i.e. 36/108);

Extra points are added to the initial score as it follows:

  • + 0,1 points  for each ‘cum laude’ award obtained in any 6 ECTS course and proportionally assigned for exceeding credits
  • + max 3 points calculated by subtracting 27 from the weighted average of the marks obtained.

The final mark will be rounded to the nearest integer.

The 'cum laude' honor can be awarded by unanimous decision of the Graduation Board only if the initial score exceeds 111.5 and if it is assigned the maximum mark for the thesis work (30 or 30 cum laude).

The Graduation Board will decide the final grade on the basis of the final discussion and on the curriculum.
