Curriculum Intelligent Embedded Systems

Logo EIT Digital

The curriculum in Intelligent Embedded Systems is part of the EIT Digital Master School. The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is an independent EU body created to  increase Europe’s ability to innovate by nurturing entrepreneurial talents. The EIT Digital is the branch of the EIT focusing on Digital innovation.
The program offers a two-year education, the first at the University of Bologna, the second in a University of choice among Berlin, Budapest, Heindoven, Stockolm and Turku.
The curriculum is technically focused on Intelligent Embedded System, but also includes a minor of 30 CFUs covering topics in digital innovation and entepreneurship.
The first year at the University of Bologna aims at offering to the student a full understanding of the most recent trends in software engineering for embedded systems, including example of applications. The second year may be chosen to be more software or hardware oriented and offers a specialisation and a graduation project. The graduation project includes an internship at a company or a research institute and results in a Master thesis with a strong innovation and entrepreneurship dimension.
Part of the curriculum is the EIT Digital Summer School, a two-week programmes held at several locations in Europe, in relation to five areas with major societal and industrial challenges, and business opportunities: Digital Cities, Digital Industry, Digital Wellbeing, Digital Tech, and Digital Finance.
The EIT Digital Master School enables the students to engage with academic, research and industrial partners across Europe. As a student, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with the EIT industrial partners and bring innovation to the market as part of your Innovation and Entrepreneurship studies.

Why Intelligent Embedded Systems

Smart embedded technologies are one of the key drivers of the digital transformation and their presence in our everyday lives is continuously increasing. There is a need to embed more and more intelligence into different types of devices that interact with the physical world, even very small ones. The focus of  the Embedded Systems (ES) programme is on the enabling technologies, design methodologies, and implementation strategies of these intelligent cyber-physical systems, where computation, networking, and physical processes meet and get integrated.

The mission of the ES programme is to expose students to a cross-disciplinary study and work environment and provide a holistic skillset on embedded intelligent systems, their underlying technologies, their development, and their integration. The ES programme empowers students to become world-class innovators and specialists in the field of embedded systems, capable of developing smart embedded solutions for new challenges in the domains of cyber-physical systems and internet of things, covering a wide range of industries (e.g. manufacturing, transport, telecommunications, construction, agriculture & forestry, mining, energy production & delivery, health services, and education). Graduates will also be capable of taking on leading management roles in embedded systems and more general ICT companies.

Programme structure

The programme is structured as follows:

  • 1st (entry) year at the University of Bologna (Cesena and Forlì Campus): common courses;
  • 2nd (exit) year abroad, one university at student's choice among selected institutions (Berlin, Budapest, Eindhoven, Turku, Stockholm): specialization.

At the end of the programme, students will obtain a double degree from the two universities as well as an EIT certificate.

The detailed programme structure is available here.

How to enroll

The enrollment process is managed by EIT. Please refer to the Application page for all the details.

When and how to submit the study plan

You can submit your study plan if you are duly enrolled  in the programme and have paid the tuition fees. If you are a non-EU international student, you must also hold a valid Residence Permit.

To sumbit/change your study plan, you need to access Studenti Online with your University username and password and select the activities you are interested in, then click on “save”.

Intelligent Embedded Systems students have to choose 3 courses out of the following 4:

Embedded Systems and Internet of Things, Pervasive Computing, Intelligent Robotic Systems, Smart Vehicular Systems.

You can sumbit/change your study plan in two periods during the academic year :

First period: from October 11th, 2021 – to November 12th, 2021
Second period: from February 14th, 2022 – to March 11th, 2022

Career opportunities

Many European companies are world leading in the field of embedded systems design and have a strong demand for highly skilled, creative engineers, innovators, system architects, and specialists. In this ever-changing world, Europe needs brand new companies that are able to provide innovative embedded solutions to address societal challenges, to improve the quality of life, and to boost the European economy and leadership. Graduates of this programme could be the pioneers to bring about that change.

As a result, ES can lead to a very wide variety of jobs. To name a few: Embedded Systems Engineer, Embedded Solutions Engineer, Robotic Systems Software Engineer, Embedded Operating Systems Software Developer, Hardware Engineer, Wireless Embedded Software Engineer, Audio Software Systems Engineer, Autonomous Vehicle Systems Engineer, Automotive Systems Engineer, Internet of Things Solutions Architect, Software Test Engineer, Embedded Systems R&D Test Engineer, Space Vehicle Software Test and Systems Engineer.

Tuition Fee Amounts

Tuition fees for the University of Bologna are calculated based on the 2021 ISEE value with special subsidies in relation to the right to higher education. First year students with an ISEE of up to €23,000 benefit from full exemption. Above this limit, tuition fees are calculated progressively.

The ISEE value must be submitted, even if you have not enrolled in the Degree Programme, by 2 November 2021, at 18:00 (or by 15 November 2021, at 18:00, paying a €100 penalty) accessing ER-GO Online Services, alternatively you will have to pay the full amount.
