English for Science

All students enrolled in the Single Cycle degree program in Pharmacy are eligible to attend the optional course English for Science.

Aims and objectives:

This course focuses on the development of essential language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) in the classroom with upper-intermediate/advanced level students and to increase their language competencies with a special focus on how to use English and Italian in the field of pharmacy.

Course content:

Medical Vocabulary comprehension and word formation

Patient complaints

Listening and pronunciation (English and Italian)

Pharmacist/Patient dialogues (English and Italian)

Idiomatic expressions

Roleplays

Teaching mode and attendance:

The course takes place twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 18:00 to 20:00. Each session lasts 90 minutes and will be available online via TEAMS. All students who registered for the course via Studenti Online will receive an invitation link to join the class. The first encounter is planned for the 24th of April 2024 at 18:00.

How to book the place:

Attendance to these courses has been capped to a maximum number of 50 students.

If interested, you should verify as soon as you can if it is still possible to join in, since the application will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Enrollment into the course will be possible from the 17th of April 2024 until the 24th of April 2024.

A second enrollment window might be scheduled based on availability.

Activity, assessment and evaluation

Activity: Students are expected to participate in the seminar by working in teams as well as individually. When provided, it is advisable to read and analyze the class materials before the lesson in order to contribute actively to discussions by presenting information, ideas, and comments. 

Assessment: Quizzes and oral assessment of real-life situations and roleplay.

The course is structured as an interactive seminar, and classes will cover vocabulary and expressions related to topics of interest for Pharmacy students, as well as pharmacist – patient dialogues with a focus on both English and Italian useful expressions, and – when appropriate – a contrast between English and Italian grammar.
