The international degree in Genomics provides the theoretical and practical basis for training a professional capable of applying IT, mathematical and statistical skills to the analysis of genomic data and, consequently, to the analysis of transcriptomic, proteomic and epigenomic data, the biology of systems and metagenomics, in prokaryotes, eukaryotes and humans.
The compulsory learning activities result in the acquisition of:
1) preparatory knowledge of mathematical analysis, algebra, physics and chemistry;
2) detailed knowledge of genetics, biochemistry and the molecular biology of prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and an understanding of the organisation and method of expression of their genomes;
3) skills in programming, statistics, mathematics, algorithms and data in the biological field, as well as multi-scale modelling and computational simulation;
4) bio-informatic abilities in the analysis of nucleic acids, proteins and omic datasets and information deriving from the analysis of bulk sequencing, as well as practical skills in data mining and the querying, organisation and management of biological databases;
5) theoretical and practical skills for the analysis of communities and complex systems;
6) bio-ethical principles associated with the processing and management of sensitive data;
7) excellent knowledge of English.
The curriculum is completed with knowledge of a related and supplementary data science discipline.
The degree programme finishes with an internship that enables students to apply operationally the theoretical and practical notions acquired. This internship may be carried out in the laboratories of Universities or public or private firms and/or bodies, either in Italy or internationally.
