The degree programme in Midwifery is run bythe School of Medicine; students learn within a framework that is functional toa range of career opportunities. The main objective of the Degree Programme inMidwifery is to train professionals able to perform specific activitiesfocusing on the physical and psychological well-being of women, couples andfamilies throughout their development (birth, childhood, adolescence, maturity,pregnancy, menopause, third age), in their relative social context, withcompetences and professional skills that can also be exploited abroad. Thequality and quantity of practical activities and internships meet the relativeEC requirements, and specifically the theoretical and practical trainingstandards are in line with Directives EC 80/154 - 80/155 - 2005/36.
The learning areas are: Biomedical andBiological Sciences, Hygiene and Prevention sciences, Human and Psycho-PedagogicSciences, Ethical, Legal and Organisational Sciences, Obstetrics, Gynaecologyand Neonatal Sciences, Computer Sciences and Linguistics will provide Midwiferygraduates with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to provide qualityservices considering health needs.
The mandatory internship, coveringmidwifery, gynaecology and neonatology, is a qualifying, integral part of theDegree Programme.
The learning outcomes and clinicalinternship are understood as authentic drivers of motivation, striving for theutmost quality and ensuring the continuous development of learning standardsfor students and future professionals.
For this purpose the availability ofinternship facilities is reviewed annually, in terms of the number of availabletutors, beds and the number of services provided. The internship coordinatoruses this review to map the training opportunities in each facility and planthe internship activities in line with the learning outcomes.
The assessment of the clinical internship willbe based on: 1) the evaluation report,considering general, behavioural and professional aspects with particular focuson the practical application of theoretical studies, considering the outcomesset in line with the place of study and year of the programme, completed by thetutor and discussed with the student 2) the attendance sheet, signed daily bythe tutor, in line with the required work hours established for the programmeand 3) the programme internship record book, which certifies all the actionsrequired by the ministerial decree in order to graduate.
Agreements with various healthcareauthorities and one private facility serve to offer a range of internshipsmatching a wide range of career opportunities.
Safeguarding the professionalism of thefuture midwives, the Internship Coordinator liaises constantly with theHealthcare Authorities to monitor their professional training, continuouslyrevising the course units and teaching contents in line with technological andprofessional advancements to allow graduates to immediately embark onprofessional careers.
At the end of the three-year programme,graduates will have acquired knowledge and technical, interpersonal andeducational competences in obstetric, neonatal and gynaecological care, as wellas the learning skills required to continue onto 2nd cycle studies,1st level professional masters' programmes and post-graduatetraining courses.
Requirements
1. Admission requirements and evaluation
This study programme has restricted access.The number of places is set annually by MIUR at national level; an entranceexam is set in the methods and on the dates set in the call for applicationsfor the Healthcare Professions, published annually on the School website.
Applicants to the degree programme shallhold a five-year secondary school diploma or equivalent suitable qualificationobtained abroad, or a four-year secondary school diploma and diploma for therelative supplementary year, or, where no longer active, will be assignedcredits to be awarded.
Applicants shall also demonstrate theknowledge and competences defined annually by ministerial decree for theentrance exams to degree programmes with nationally restricted access.
The number of places, entrance exam date,contents and selection methods are published annually in the relative call forapplications.
2. Assessment of basic knowledge
The knowledge and competence requirementsfor admission are deemed to be met by applicants who obtain the followingscores in the entrance exam:
- 20 for students in the quota of Italian,EU and equivalent nationals
- 5 for students in the quota of non-EUcitizens resident abroad, as laid down in the laws in force.
The entrance exams will be held by 31January of each year.
3. Additional learning requirements and assessment
Enrolled students who did not obtain theminimum score in the entrance exam will be assigned the following AdditionalLearning Requirements ("OFA"), which must be completed during thefirst year of the programme:
Basic Medical Knowledge.
The Additional Learning Requirements aredeemed to have been passed when students pass the exam in:
- Course units in Physics and ComputerScience.
- Course units in Biology, Biochemistry andGenetics
Failure to meet the requirements by thedate set by the Academic Bodies and published on the University Portal willlead to the re-enrolment in the first year of the programme.
4. Exemption of assessment of basicknowledge
Only applicants having obtained the creditsindicated in the following subject areas in previous studies will be exemptedfrom sitting the entrance exam:
- Subject area FIS/07 (Physics Applied toCultural Heritage, the Environment, Biology and Medicine):
2 ECTS
- Subject area BIO/13 (Applied Biology): 2ECTS
- Subject area BIO/10 (Biochemistry): 2ECTS
For students from the previous degreesystem under D.M. 509/99, exemption will be approved if they have passed atleast one exam relating to the knowledge covered by the aforementioned subjectareas.
Applicants to whom this clause refersshould apply for exemption when submitting their application to the StudentAdministration Office.
