English level required

Incoming and outgoing levels required for the course and how to achieve them.

INCOMING LEVEL: B1

Students enrolled in the Stats&Maths course must be able to prove that they possess the basic English language skills that are necessary to attend classes and take exams. This basic level is the Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

From a.y. 2024/25 students prove to possess this level at the time of their application, through the entry test English TOLC-E.

OUTGOING LEVEL: B2

The Stats & maths study plan includes 6 credits for “English Language Test B – 2” (see section Studying -> Course Structure Diagram). Students must obtain these credits by the end of the second year, otherwise they will not be allowed to take the third year exams.

In order to obtain the 6 credits in their study plan, students can choose one of the following two methods:

  • take the English test managed by the CLA (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo – Linguistic Centre) by choosing among 6 different dates scheduled within each academic year. For more information on this test, specific dates and registration click here.
  • Upload on Studenti Online one of the certificates listed in the attachment (table "Certificazioni - Lingua Inglese") of level B2 or higher. For more information click here.

Please note:

  • the CLA website contains information that is only available in Italian, but if you are an International student you can write to the tutor of the course (stat.tutorsm@unibo.it) and she will help you find the information you need.
  • the English tests organised by the CLA are built with progressive difficulty; if you achieve the entry level B1 you can choose to proceed and try the next level as well. In case you achieve level B2, this will be automatically registered in your career and you will obtain the corresponding 6 credits.
  • the results of the CLA tests will only be recognised by the University of Bologna; they will not be valid for applications outside Unibo.
