One year after the passing of Professor Italo Scardovi, the Department of Statistical Sciences "Paolo Fortunati" commemorates his legacy with a dedicated day of scholarly reflection in his honor.

Professor Emeritus of the University of Bologna, Professor Scardovi was a distinguished member of numerous scientific academies, editor of the journal Alma Mater Studiorum—published by the University on the occasion of its 800th anniversary—and long-serving editor of the journal Statistica.

A charismatic educator, passionate researcher, and eloquent speaker, he was often described as fascinating by those who had the privilege of attending his lectures and talks—occasions in which he would retrace, with exceptional clarity, rigor, and critical insight, the evolution of statistical methodology in search of its philosophical foundations.

His courses in statistical inference and biometrics remain vivid in the memory of generations of students who passed through the classrooms of Via Belle Arti 41, within what was then the Faculty of Statistical Sciences—a faculty that Professor Scardovi strongly advocated for and founded in 1986. He envisioned it with a thoroughly modern outlook, grounded in the inherently interdisciplinary nature of statistics—an academic space that brought together geneticists, psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, as well as mathematicians, economists, computer scientists, and business scholars. As Professor Scardovi often remarked, statistics is not merely a modus operandi, but above all a modus intelligendi—a way of understanding reality.

This vision continues to shape the cultural identity of the Department of Statistical Sciences, which remains recognized both nationally and internationally for its distinctive and far-reaching academic character.

We invite colleagues, students, and friends to join us in remembering and celebrating Italo Scardovi's legacy.
