Gérard Arpel is a young boy who lives with his parents in a villa dominated by modernity and plastic, but he prefers the company of his maternal uncle, Monsieur Hulot, who often takes him along to the old neighborhood where he lives. Gérard’s parents do everything they can to find Hulot a job and get him married, hoping to put an end to a lifestyle they consider eccentric. Through the contrast between Hulot’s way of life and that imposed by Villa Arpel, where hostile mechanisms and unwelcoming furnishings force daily gestures into surreal rituals. Tati portrays and satirizes the pursuit of modernity blindly followed, and the consequences of confusing innovation with progress.
