Building Engineering-Architecture professional profile
FUNCTIONING A PROFESSIONAL CONTEXT:
This degree programme produces professionals able to coordinate the process chain in the construction sector in a broad sense and covers the management of resources, context specification, the protection of persons and property, and lifestyle improvement. Within this framework, there is a specific focus on themes which combine perspectives on sustainable development with technological innovation as a driver of active processes in society and the economy, on the regeneration of urban areas and the re-qualification of buildings, and on the management of complex processes.
Graduates of this discipline are eligible for roles in the field of architectural and engineering design and for technical-managerial roles with the ability to coordinate professional, business and public structures. Graduates of the second cycle degree/two year master in Building Engineering-Architecture:
- Design and manage the urban regeneration of real estate in accordance with the principles of environmental and social sustainability, in pursuit of circular economy objectives
- Design new complex building systems and manage the re-qualification of existing ones through the integration of technological, systemic, and structural security components, with a specific focus on innovation, functional and social requirements, and the figurative, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the project
- Record, analyse and evaluate the existing building heritage and design recovery projects in all its aspects, including the restoration (architectural, functional, structural and systemic) of buildings and monumental complexes within the limits permitted by the laws in force in Italy and in other European countries
- Recognise the historical and environmental features of the territory and formulate plans and designs that protect and enhance the same
- Participate, also in a coordinating role, in interdisciplinary working groups on complex urban projects, with a sound knowledge not only of the technical aspects but also of the economic feasibility and environmental compatibility of the project
- Have knowledge of and apply innovative construction materials and components
- Manage the construction process (construction management), the services (facility management), the implementation and authorisation process of a construction project (project management) and the creation of value from the management of immovable property (asset management)
- Manage the advanced modelling and digital integration of processes with a particular focus on the integration of architectural requirements, construction methods, physical-environmental requirements and structural safety, also through the use of Building Information Modelling -BIM
- Manage and coordinate the engineering phases of the project and complex technical- administrative procedures necessary for their implementation, including the issue of safety, also through advanced systems such as BIM.
COMPETENCIES ASSOCIATED TO THE FUNCTION:
The competencies associated with the second cycle degree/two year master in Building Engineering-Architecture relate to specialist roles that are also cross-functional and managerial in scope. This professional figure has a distinctive role in the formulation of complex design solutions in the field of architecture and building engineering, controlling the entire process from the design phase to the execution of the works, their maintenance and enhancement. The competencies associated with the role include therefore:
- Analytical skills, in order to formulate complex technological solutions of a multidisciplinary nature - Cultural knowledge, in order to manage the processes related to technological development in the field of new constructions
- Design training aimed at connecting the specialist components, from the urban dimension to the building scale
- The ability to use advanced information systems to formulate and represent complex problems of both a theoretical and applied nature.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
On passing the State exam, the Building and Architectural Engineer is qualified to perform all professional activities set out respectively in the Register of Engineers, section A, in the civil/environmental sector, and in the Register of Architects, section B in the Architectural sector.
The attitude developed by the graduate in Building Engineering-Architecture with regard to the formulation of solutions and the optimisation of construction systems and processes provides an essential basis on which to effectively tackle complex issues of a technical, organisational and regulatory nature in the following roles:
- engineering-architectural consultant with specific competence in modelling the behaviour of construction, installation and structural systems of the building structures and in assessing the environmental quality requirements of urban real estate
- engineering-architectural designer of construction, installation and structural systems and components
- engineering-architectural project manager with specialist competencies (project manager/design manager/facility manager)
- engineering-architectural manager of public administration processes in planning offices, one-stop construction desks, one-stop desks for production activities, the environment, public works and heritage.
This qualification also provides access to the PhD Programme, the Specialization Programme and to the Professional Master's Programme (2nd Level).
Continuing to study for students
It gives access to third cycle studies (PhD Programmes / Postgraduate Schools) and master courses of second degree.
