Final examination: modalities and deadlines

To graduate, you have to sit a final examination designed to verify that you have reached the education objectives set by the Degree Programme.

The final examination consists in the public discussion, in front of an appointed Committee, of an original dissertation written on a subject pertinent to your studies, elaborated in an original way, under the guidance of a supervisor.

Any professor who is in charge of a teaching activity within the University may become a supervisor, as long as their teaching activity falls within the Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors enviosioned in the Degree Programme's regulation. Exceptions might be asked to the Degree Programme's Board, submitting a specific request to the Teaching Office.

The supervisor will monitor and check your research work, verifying its adequacy for the discussion, as well as its originality and inventiveness, even using web applications.

The Committee will assess the presentation using the student's curriculum as a reference. It is possible to use slides during the thesis’ discussion, and the Committee may ask in-depth questions on methods, results and any developments of the work.

Extension of the exam session and final examination deadline to 15 June 2023

The exam session and final examination deadline for a.y. 2021/22 has been extended to 15 June 2023 (Decree-Law No. 316 Prot. no. 62200 of 7 March 2023).

If you were unable to graduate in March due to issues related to the pandemic, you can submit a graduation application for the extraordinary session, but only if you are enrolled regularly, “fuori corso” (past envisaged completion time for the degree course) or as a repeating student in a.y. 2021/22 in the last year of a full-length degree programme.

You are only eligible for this extension if your study plan was complete and you fulfilled all attendance requirements by the end of a.y. 2021/22. More specifically, if you are enrolled regularly, “fuori corso” (past envisaged completion time for the degree course) or as a repeating student in a.y. 2021/22 in the second year and, by the end of the academic year, you included in your study plan all the learning activities provided for in your degree programme in order to take the exams and graduate.

If you have to take exams in order to meet all the necessary requirements, please contact the teacher in question directly. Remember that the deadline for the requirements is the 21 April.

If you are a student required to take a University Language Centre language test, you can find the scheduled test date on the CLA website: a language test will be organised exclusively for students who submitted a graduation application for the extraordinary graduation session. All information about the test and the scheduled date can be found on the CLA website.

You are not eligible for this extension if:

  • You failed to meet attendance requirements by the end of a.y. 2021/22;
  • You made changes to your study plan in a.y. 2022/23 and took exams related to that study plan;
  • You did not have a complete study plan, so in a.y. 2022/23 you had to make changes to include exams
  • you are enrolled regularly, “fuori corso” (past envisaged completion time for the degree course) or as a repeating student in a.y. 2021/22 in the second year, and in a.y. 2022/23 you made changes to your study plan to include exams because your study plan did not contain the 120 university credits you needed to graduate;
  • If you were enrolled regularly in a.y. 2021/22 in the last year of a full-length degree programme and are now enrolled in a.y. 2022/23 as a repeating student.

Please note: this is not an early session of a.y. 2022/23. If you are enrolled in a.y. 2022/23 in the last year of a full-length degree programme, you are not eligible for this extension.

If you are eligible for this extension, from 31 March you must go to Studenti Online and select the extraordinary session. The dates of the session for most degree programmes are as follows:

  • Deadline for application: 12 April,
  • Late registration the session: 20 April
  • Admission requirements deadline: 21 April
  • Deadline for uploading your dissertation: 12 May
  • Deadline for supervisor approval of the dissertation: 16 May
  • Graduation session: 26 May

Remember that if you have paid your tuition fees for a.y. 2022/23, you are entitled to a refund that will be processed after your graduation.

Graduation application

To submit the online application, students must access Studenti Online and complete the procedures before the set deadlines, as listed below.

Graduation application requires the payment of €32.00 in duty stamp (imposta di bollo).

An additional fee of 100€ will be required if the students fail to submit the graduation application by the established deadlines.

The graduation application lasts for one academic year.  If the student fails to set the final examination within the session (academic year) for which they have applied, they will have to repeat the online application and pay the 32€ duty stamp a second time.

Admission Requirements

In order to graduate, the students must have:

  • sat all the exams in the study plan and had them recorded;
  • paid all tuition fees;
  • completed the Alma Laurea questionnaire on Studenti Online;
  • uploaded the dissertation in .pdf format on Studenti Online. The dissertation can be uploaded multiple times, until the relevant deadline expires. When uploading the dissertation, the system will ask to enter some key words and a brief abstract.

The Student Administration Office will verify the requirements and will contact the students if any issues arise, to allow the regularization of the position before the final examination.

Deadline for administrative requirements

By the deadlines for administrative requirements – as listed above - the students must have:

  • taken and passed all the exams included in their academic career;
  • paid all the required tuition fees;
  • completed the online AlmaLaurea questionnaire or asked the Student Administration Office to be exempted from the database;
  • verified that their supervisor approved the thesis’ title (if not, the supervisor needs to be notified as soon as possible).

Deadline for the thesis’ upload

By the deadlines for the thesis’ upload – as listed above - the students must upload on StudentiOnline their thesis in .pdf format; the students must also fill out the online form with their work’s key words and the abstract, as required. The students can upload their thesis and make changes multiple times up to the deadline. After said date, further changes cannot be made.

Attention: the title used in the field “Thesis Title” in the graduation application must be the same as the title page of the .pdf document. The student and the supervisor must have agreed on the content of the document in advance.

The University of Bologna offers students the possibility to publish their thesis on the institutional thesis repository, AMSLaurea. The reposition happens in an automatic way through Studenti Online, after the final exam and the registration of the final grade have been completed. Studenti Online automatically transfers to the repository the thesis as well as its metadata and legal authorizations (access and distribution). When uploading the thesis, the students must choose what level of consultation they would like for their work (online access for everyone immediately after the discussion and validation by the offices / postponed after a restriction period that the student and supervisor have previously agreed on / limited access for users with UNIBO credentials).

For further information on AMS publications, please check the attachments.

Deadline for the thesis approval

By the deadlines listed above the students’ thesis must have been approved by the supervisor.

With the approval, the supervisor authorizes the students’ admissions to the final examination.

If the deadline approaches and the supervisor has not approved the thesis yet, please contact directly the supervisor.

Deadline for submitting the declaration for deposit

By the deadlines listed above the students must download the declaration of deposit, which is automatically generated by the system after the supervisor’s approval. The students must sign and send the declaration to the Campus Library at the email address: bibliotecacesena.info@unibo.it , together with the scan of their ID. Further instructions can be found in the attachments. The online publication on the institutional thesis repository AMS Tesi di Laurea will only be possible if the students send the declaration.
