Structural Engineer

Structural engineers design complex structures (buildings, bridges, tanks, etc.), managing different aspects of design: structural analysis and modeling of the external actions and their effects; selection of the most appropriate materials; design of various structural members and detailing. Structural engineers are able to retrofit existing buildings and structures using advanced techniques.
Structural Engineers can assess the safety of existing or new structures, with respect to different types of hazards, and with reference to modern performance-based building codes. They use software to perform linear, non-linear, static and dynamic analyses of complex structures, also with reference to earthquake engineering problems. Finally, they design and perform complex experimental tests and analyze the results.

Hydraulic Engineers

Hydraulic Engineers can tackle different aspects of the design and management of different types of  complex hydraulic infrastructures (hydrographic basins; water distribution, sewage, and drainage networks; pumping stations; hydropower plants; streams; rivers; estuaries; beaches/coasts; and harbours) such as: functional analysis; design of new infrastructures or systems (from preliminary design to detailing); supervision of construction; life-long monitoring. While performing those tasks they define the appropriate loads (rainfall, flowrates, waves), appropriately model the infrastructure behavior (by means of physical or numerical models), design and verify structural elements and technical equipments. The main output of these steps are technical drawings with structural detailing and technical reports on infrastructures. Hydraulic Engineers also perform  complex experimental tests on physical scale models and analyze the results.

Transportation infrastructure engineer

Transportation infrastructures engineers are able to design and analyze complex transportation infrastructures. They can manage the entire design process, form preliminary phases to construction and lifelong management, with particular reference to safety and environmental impact. These professional have also sound competence in the design of underground and of seismically exposed infrastructures. Transportation engineers also design ground retaining structures. Their fundamental competences concern the design and the construction of roads, railroads, airports, the maintenance of transportation infrastructures and the management of construction sites and complex infrastructures.

Transportation System Engineer

Transportation system engineers design complex transportation networks containing different transportation means and in particular: urban and rural road networks, collective transportations systems (on roads and railroads), railway systems, maritime transportation, and airplane transportation. T. s. engineers have sound knowledge of the most advanced software for transportation system design. They are able to design urban transportation plans considering different aspects: functional, economical, and environmental. They are able to design complex nodes such as, crossroads with and without traffic-lights, railway stations, airports, harbors. They can take part in the management of services given by different companies: collective urban transportation companies, collective extra-urban transportation companies, regional or national railway transportation companies, naval and air transportation companies.

Geomatics Engineer

Survey engineers design and manage complex surveying projects, aimed at surveying and monitoring of structures and of environment; they can use the most advanced geomatic techniques. They are able to choose the most appropriate techniques to be used in different engineering tasks, e.g. topographic techniques, digital photogrammetry and image analysis, GPS, aerial and land lase-scan, multispectral surveying form airplanes or satellites.
They are involved in the creation, verification and management of topographic databases, Land Information Systems and Geographic Information Systems, numeric maps, cadastral maps. They perform monitoring tasks, during the construction of structures and infrastructures and are able to perform high precision surveys for structural monitoring. Finally they are able to perform complex experimental tests and experimental data analysis.

Geotechnical Engineer

Geotechnical Engineers have specific competence in solving geotechnical problems involved in every civil engineering projects. They are able to define the properties of the soils and define adequate geotechnical models to analyze soil behavior and soil structure interaction. Geotechnical Engineers choose the best design solutions using advanced techniques. Their expertise also cover the design, execution and analysis of geotechnical investigation  campaigns.

Civil Engineer in Building Construction

Civil Engineers define the structural design, the design development, and the detailing of buildings together with other professionals as architects, mechanical engineers, and electrical engineers, in the framework of an integrated design and delivery process. Having a sound knowledge of the most recent standards on energy saving and air conditioning of buildings and the relative analysis tools, they develop the thermotechnical design of buildings and analyze the building-plant  system in order to optimize energy consumption, while keeping an high comfort for the occupants. They use advanced methods for building  construction as far as materials, technologies, and management of the construction are concerned. They define and design  standard procedures to assure safety and performances of structures. They also have specific competences in rehabilitation of heritage buildings and in the use of GEOMATICA techniques integrated with other diagnostic procedures.

Supervisor of Construction Works

They manage and supervise construction works with reference to different Civil Engineering projects (buildings, water systems, geotechnical interventions, infrastructures). The may be in charge of the supervision of the entire construction process or of specific parts of it.

Engineer for the Production Control of Materials and Artifacts for Civil Engineering

They are in charge of the manufacturing of materials for civil engineering (concrete, structural steel, bitumen,  etc.), as well of pre-cast structural and non-structural elements. They plan the industrial production with reference to the orders placed, they are responsible for supplies and controls on materials and products.

Engineer for Safety and Civil Protection

They design and carry out engineering solutions aimed at maintaining or increasing the safety of the population, the safety of buildings and civil infrastructures exposed to hydraulic, geological and seismic hazards. They have sound competences in the management of information and maps of high risk areas and are able to analyze different intervention options.
They design infrastructures and interventions to increase the safety of civil constructions and plan structural and non-structural interventions aimed at reducing the effects of natural hazards. They develop environmental impact analyses concerning civil infrastructures as well as the plans for Civil Protection. Furthermore, they prepare the safety operative plans, and know the most advanced criteria concerning security of workers in civil engineering construction sites.

Career opportunities

Civil Engineers may be employed in public administrations and construction companies, or they may work as independent professionals.

Employment in public administrations

Expert technicians in local authorities  or national authorities in different fields of Civil Engineering, such as: design, management and control of buildings, water systems, infrastructures, transportation systems and management and surveying of territory and its related constructions and works. Expert technician in authorities in charge for risk reduction and Civil Protection.

Employment in construction companies

Expert technicians in construction companies (management of construction sites, manufacture and quality control of materials and pre-cast elements). They can also be employed by companies working on urban or rural areas (companies managing airports, motorways, mobility manager) which require technical-management skills of projects, capacity to design complex constructions and management skills of GIS (Georaphical Information Systems). Expert technicians in the management of services given by transportation companies working at different scales.

Professional Engineers

Design of complex civil structures. Supervision o f construction works for civil buildings, water systems, infrastructures, geotechnical works, surveying. They can also perform any of the tasks listed at the previous points as external consultants.
