To graduate, you have to sit a final examination designed to verify that you have reached the education objectives set by the Degree Programme.
The final examination consists in writing a dissertation on a subject pertinent to your studies, elaborated in an original way, under the guidance of a supervisor. The dissertation will be discussed publicly during a specific final examination session in front of a Board.
The Board will assess your performance using your curriculum as a reference. During the dissertation discussion, you may use slides and the Commission may ask you in-depth questions on methods, results and any developments of your work.
One graduation session is scheduled each year. The session includes a number of dates, each with their deadlines for the submission of the graduation application, requirements and dates.
Please note that the Degree Programme Coordinator will register the credits related to the preparation of the final examination in your student career after the Supervisor's dissertation approval and, in any case, by the deadline for the registration of all credits in your study plan.

To submit your application online, you must access Studenti Online before the deadlines set for the application submission and the requirements.
Graduation applications require the payment of €32.00 in stamp duty (imposta di bollo).
Applications submitted after the ordinary deadline but within the final cut-off date (“scadenza tardiva con mora”) must be submitted with the payment of a €100.00 late fee.
Students who do not manage to graduate within the selected date must ask the Student Administration Office for an annulment and submit their application again for the following graduation dates, by the established deadlines, with no additional payment.
The renewal of the graduation application is necessary to graduate in an academic year that is subsequent to the one selected for the first time. This entails the payment of €16.00 in stamp duty (imposta di bollo).
For any issues about your graduation application, you need to contact the Student Administration Office.
In order to graduate, you must have:
The Student Administration Office will verify all requirements and will contact you if there are any issues, to allow you to regularise your position before the final examination.
The graduation application is valid for just one graduation session. If you graduate in a later session, you will have to re-submit your graduation application and pay only the duty stamp.
As an official document, the final thesis must be submitted in a digital format.
You can present a hard copy (light card bound) to Graduation Board during your defense .
1) Submit the final thesis in digital format
According to the above-mentioned deadlines, students must submit their thesis in .pdf format on the Studenti Online webpage. In order to do so, students need to follow the instructions indicated on the dedicated page. The thesis will be then transferred in the UNIBO Archive and on the 'AMS Tesi di Laurea' webpage. During this process, student may indicate if they wish to authorize the online publication:
- if students select YES, they can choose among:
- Open online access right after the thesis has been discussed
- Open online access only after a specific date (in case the thesis needs to remain confidential for a prescribed time, i.e. to grant a patent)
- Limited online access to authenticated UNIBO users ONLY and external users logging in from UNIBO libraries;
- Approved publication of metadata ONLY.
In the first 3 above-mentioned options, after the Supervisor has provided his approval, students are asked to print, sign and submit the 'Declaration of conformity' (with a copy of a valid identity card) to biblioteca.fisica@unibo.it by the above-mentioned deadlines. Students can find the pdf file of the Declaration of conformity in their graduation application on Studenti Online.
- If students select NO, their thesis will not be published (select this option in case the thesis needs to remain confidential, i.e. in case it contains sensitive data)
NOTE: students are kindly invited to upload their thesis in the open access mode. In exceptional cases only (i.e. patent granting or investigations running under specific publication constraints) students can choose a different mode but they are requested to send an e-mail to the Degree course Director indicating their motivation.
Students are asked to remind that the online upload of the thesis is irreversible and the title must correspond to the one indicated in the graduation application on Studenti Online. Once the supervisor approves the thesis, it will be no longer editable.
2) Declaration of Conformity
By the above-mentioned deadlines, students are required to submit to the DIFA's Library the signed receipt of the Declaration of Conformity of the digital thesis (if the thesis is published online, even with restrictions). You can send the receipt (with a copy of a valid identity card) to biblioteca.fisica@unibo.it. Students can find the pdf file of the Declaration of conformity in their graduation application on Studenti Online.
1) Assignment of an Opponent (so-called 'Controrelatore').
Students will be assigned a 'Controrelatore' few days after their thesis has been uploaded.
Students must contact their 'Controrelatore' via email in order to:
- make sure he/she needs a .pdf or a hard copy of the paper;
- fix an appointment for a preliminary interview.
2) Prepare and submit a .pdf presentation.
In order to defend their thesis, students must use a pdf presentation.
Students must send their thesis presentation to the Degree Programme Coordinator.
