2025 Physics Colloquium – "Oxide Surface: Where Theory and Experiments Meet"

DIFA invites you to the first Physics Colloquium 2025, a public lecture series that brings together the entire Faculty, including students, to stimulate discussions in the field of science.

27 March 2025 from 15:00 to 18:00

Aula Magna, Via Irnerio 46, Bologna - In presence event

We are delighted to invite you to the first Physics Colloquium 2025, a public lecture series designed to bring together the entire Faculty, including students, to stimulate cutting-edge discussions in the field of science.

Title: ‘Oxide Surface: Where Theory and Experiments Meet’

Details

Speaker: Prof. Ulrike Diebold, TU Wien

Date: Thursday, 27 March

Time: 3:00 PM

Location: DIFA's Aula Magna, Via Irnerio 46, Bologna

Abstract:

Oxides show  vast variablitiy in electronic and chemical properties, which makes them ideal materials in a large range of technical applications. Often, surfaces and interfaces play a major role in the functioning of related devices and schemes.  Our research group is devoted to investigating the fundamental properties of oxide surfaces, from complex reconstructions to the interplay between localized charges (‘polarons’) and chemical properties.

In the talk, I will highlight a few recent results, which are all based on the fruitful interaction between experiments using surface science methods and ab-initio calculations.

Speaker's short bio:

Prof. Ulrike Diebold is a leading figure in surface physics at the TU Wien. After receiving her doctorate from the same institution and spending 20 years in academia in the USA, she started an outstanding research programme focusing on metal oxides at the atomic scale. He leads the SFB TACO coordinated research project and has received prestigious awards, including two ERC Advanced Grants and the Wittgenstein Prize. Since 2022, he has also served as Vice President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

We look forward to your participation in this event, which promises to foster a sense of community and stimulate inspiring exchanges of ideas.
