Second Cycle Degree/Two Year Master in Computer Science and Engineering

Internship in preparation for the final examination

The internship in preparation for the final examination is a training activity included in the study plan of the Degree programme that allows you to acquire part of the learning credits associated with the final examination, and is an opportunity to acquire practical skills and encourage a first contact with the job market.

The internship is activated on the basis of an agreement entered between the University of Bologna and the Hosting Organization or Company (company, public body, professional firm, etc.) and on the basis of a project agreed with the final thesis supervisor and the Hosting Organization/Company's contact person.

Who is eligible

The Internship is aimed at enrolled students, and is an activity that must take place within the path of Degree programme study plan.

The internship cannot be carried out at a facility in which the legal representative, partner or responsible manager has ties of kinship or affinity within the 2nd degree with the requesting student.

Duration

Unless otherwise specified or provided by national or European regulations, the internship has normally a duration of 25 hours for each credit assigned to this type of activity in the Degree programme's study plan. The internship must be completed within 12 months after the start date.

Upon completing the scheduled internship hours, the student shall no longer be able to access the hosting organization/company as an intern provided that the student shall no longer be authorized and, therefore, without insurance coverage.

How to choose the Host Structure

The internship can be carried out at both internal University facilities/labs, and at external organizations/companies, in Italy and abroad. To choose where to carry out the internship, the student can access the Online Internships platform.

From the home page of this platform, the student can view:

  • The list of curricular internship offers proposed by the organizations/companies already having an agreement with the University of Bologna.

Once the student has identified the offer that is of his/her interest, he/she can submit an internship request by following the specific procedure contained in the "Internships Handbook" available in the attachments box of this page.

  • The list of the organizations/companies

Once the student has identified the company/organization of his/her interest, he/she can contact it and verify the effective availability of the company/organization to host him/her as an intern. The student can then submit a request by following the specific procedure contained in the "Internships Handbook" available in the attachments box.

If the student has already made arrangements with a partner organization/company, he/she will have to invite the Company/Organization to access the Online Internships application and upload an internship offer dedicated to him/her, as explained in the "Internships Handbook" available in the attachments box.

If the student wishes to carry out the internship at a laboratory of a University Department, he/she must make arrangements with a professor affiliated with that laboratory, and follow the specific internal self-application procedure explained in the "Internships Handbook", available in the attached box. The internship application request must include the name of the teaching tutor who must also be the thesis supervisor.

Alternatively, the student can propose a new internship company/organization not yet affiliated with our University; for this purpose, you can consult the specific information page Internships — University of Bologna .

Furthermore, some affiliated organizations/companies have chosen not to be visible via the Online Internships platform, and therefore will not be able to receive the student’s self-applications, but will only be able to directly upload ad personam internship offers (i.e., aimed at a single intern with whom they have previously made agreements) or generic ones.

How to activate an internship

The student can submit his/her internship request exclusively using the Online Internships platform .

The online request for activation of the internship must be made only after having defined with the Host Company or Organization and with the Tutor/Supervisor Teacher all the characteristics of the internship in preparation for the final exam (location, period, activities). The Internship Office will accept requests submitted by the tenth day of each month and will submit them to the Internship Board of Teachers/Commission in charge during that month, which will evaluate the requests in the following days or, in any case, normally by the end of the month. Requests received after the deadline will be submitted to the Internship Board of Teachers/Commission of the following month.

Approval of the internship

The application requests will be submitted to the relevant Internship Board of Teachers/Commission, which will authorize the start of the internship. The student will receive an email notification informing him/her of the approval of the internship request, containing the necessary instructions for obtaining the attendance records.

During the internship

During the internship period, the student shall have to maintain contact/relations with the academic tutor, who can provide for any support or advice on how to carry out the activities. The student must record the daily activities carried out in the appropriate attendance records. The internship hours must be recorded in the period between the start/end dates specified in the attendance records. If there are any changes with respect to these dates, it is necessary to notify the International Relations and Internships Office.

Before leaving the Host Organization/Company, you must ensure that the records have been countersigned by the contact person of the Host Company/Organization.

Withdrawal, interruption, suspension of the internship

If the student intends to withdraw from, suspend or interrupt the internship for reasons that no longer allow him/her to regularly continue the internship activities, he/she must communicate the decision firstly to the academic tutor/supervisor, and to the contact person at the Host Organization/Company. The student must then communicate his/her decision via e-mail to campuscesena.tirocini@unibo.it to the International Relations and Internship Office, providing the motivations of this decision, and copying the academic tutor and the organization/company’s contact person.

What to do at the end of the internship

At the end of the internship, by using the Online Internships platform, the student will have to:

- indicate the internship end date;

- enter the attendance records as duly signed by all parties;

- enter a short final report, regarding which it is possible to discuss with the academic tutor/supervisor;

- fill out the online questionnaire.

In the Online internships platform, the academic tutor/supervisor will be able to view the documentation entered by the student (questionnaire completed online, attendance records and internship report) and the questionnaire completed by the company contact person. On the basis of this documentation and possibly after an interview with the student, the academic tutor will have to express his/her opinion on the validity of the internship by evaluating it positively or requesting a modification.

In the event of a positive result, you will have to contact Prof. Mario Bravetti mario.bravetti@unibo.it .

The teacher responsible for the exam record will view the documentation entered by the student, the evaluation expressed by the academic tutor, and the online questionnaire filled out by the company contact person within the Online internships platform; in case of a positive result, the exam will be passed with a Pass mark and the student will acquire the relevant credits provided for by the study plan.

Insurance cover

The University of Bologna shall grant to intern students an insurance coverage against accidents at work, as well as for civil liability, with valid Italian/international insurance companies operating in the market. In the case of travel or missions to locations or structures not indicated in the approved curricular internship project, the student can ask for/request the extension of insurance coverage to those locations/sites, also during the internship period, provided that the travel is consistent with the objectives of the internship itself, and it is agreed with the contact person of the host organization/company. The Safety and Security Training is mandatory for all students who want to carry out an internship.

Additionally, in the event of an internship abroad, consult the information page on safety and security
