The 2nd cycle degree programme in Computer Science and Technology aims to form specialist graduates specifically qualified in computer science. This general objective requires the extension of the mathematical and computing knowledge and skills acquired in the three-year first cycle degree programme, allowing students to integrate their knowledge and to manage more complex situations, as well as to pass judgements even in conditions where information is limited or incomplete. The specific learning outcomes differ in content and structure in accordance with the particular degree curriculum chosen. The areas that may be covered include: information systems and web technology, artificial vision and image processing, logistics. One of the specific aims of the degree programme is to train and prepare students to continue further studies at the level of a PhD programme which provides career opportunities in Universities and Research Institutes.
Graduates in Computer Science and Technology will have:
- a broad range of knowledge and skills in the various areas of computer science and communications aimed at their use in design, development and management of networks and computer systems, regardless of the specific area of application;
- specialist knowledge and skills in specific areas of computer science based on the curriculum chosen;
- command over mathematical tools especially as regards those necessary for the formal modeling, analysis, evaluation, optimisation and the creation of systems;
- the ability to gather experimental data and interpret their significance in order to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of complex computer systems;
- the ability to work in a group, to operate within defined levels of independence, organising and managing other people's work;
- the ability to think up and/or apply original ideas in a research context and to resolve problems in new, unfamiliar environments that may be within a broader or interdisciplinary context;
- the ability to integrate knowledge, manage complex situations and to form judgements even when data are incomplete;
- the ability to use effectively at least one other European Union language, in addition to Italian, both orally and in writing, within the specific area of their competence for the exchange of general information;
- the ability to carry out bibliographical research using databases and computer networks.
To foster these skills the 2nd cycle degree programme in Computer Science and Technology:
- includes activities that aim to provide advanced skills in mathematics, especially as regards specific sectors such as combinational optimisation, as well as in the main areas of computer science (including theoretical computer science, algorithms, operative systems, information systems, web and multi-media technologies);
- provides for project work and laboratory work aimed at developing knowledge of programming methods.
