Presentation

The international degree programme in Digital Humanities and Digital Knowledge (DHDK) offers a cross-disciplinary curriculum designed to foster close connections between humanities and the sciences of representation and processing of information and knowledge.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Mainly designed for students holding a three-year degree in humanities, the programme is delivered in English and targets those who wish to explore the field of literary, linguistic, historical and cultural studies and the arts, using models, systems and computational methods to represent and process data, information and knowledge. At the end of the programme students will be able to manage the whole cycle of design and planning of heterogeneous and complex digital cultural objects: from the concept to the theories and methodologies to manipulate them, and their deployment by end users.

PROGRAMME CONTENTS

The programme curriculum spans a variety of subjects, aiming to hybridize and integrate skills and know-hows with an inter- and multi- disciplinary approach.  The programme covers three macro-areas of learning:

  1. computer science (principles and languages of programming; data modelling and multimedia database design; design and creation of Web applications and management of interfaces; representation and extraction of knowledge; production of multimedia applications in the context of cultural heritage);
  2. literary, linguistic, historical/cultural and related to the arts in the digital context (digital representation of texts; management and promotion of the cultural heritage in archives, libraries and museums; digital editing and issues related to the editing of texts, documents and different types of media; retrieval and extraction of information from datasets);
  3. complementary: economy, law and communication (marketing in the web and digital environments; company strategy practices; company start-up procedures; creation of a Web project plan; social media strategy; principles of communication in a heterogeneous digital context; problems linked to digital writing for multimedia and Web environments; Web data analysis methods, management of intellectual property in the digital environment; problems related to open access).

This generates competencies and expertise in:

  • management and editing of ancient and modern books and archival documents
  • processing of multimedia cultural resources
  • manipulation of complex information systems
  • supervision of the entire life cycle of objects (data curation)
