The competition will take place approximately between October 2023 and March 2024.

The CFA Research Challenge is one of the most important university competitions globally, involving more than 1000 universities, over 6400 students and 3000 volunteers in 90 countries.

It is a competition where a team, made up of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 university students, works for some months on the analysis of a listed company with the aim of writing a report like real financial analysts and providing an investment recommendation: Sell, Hold, Buy.

During the project, the students will have the opportunity to carry out company and industry analysis activities, analyze and reclassify historical financial statements as well as building prospective ones, evaluate the company’s ESG positioning by producing the company score and competitors’ analysis, create a valuation model on which to define a target price, etc.

It is a very complex and difficult job, which allows students to put into practice the knowledge acquired during their university career and benefit from the support of professors and mentors. During the project the students will also have the opportunity to meet the management and the investor relator of the analyzed company. In addition, they will have access to financial platforms such as FactSet or Refinitiv.

The work will then be evaluated in two stages. The first is based on the evaluation of the written report, the second, on the evaluation of the presentation to be carried out in 20 minutes; 10 minutes to present the analysis and 10 minutes for Q&A. In both cases the judges are professionals who participate as volunteers.

In Italy, the competition has just ended with the victory of the Politecnico di Milano and the participation of 10 universities. In addition to the Politecnico: Università Cattolica di Milano, Ca' Foscari di Venezia, Università di Roma Tor Vergata, Università di Firenze, Università di Bologna, Sapienza Università di Roma, Università di Pavia, Università Politecnica delle Marche e Federico II Università di Napoli.

The winner of the Italian competition will then participate in the Southern Europe competition, and, in case of victory in the EMEA final and, finally, in the global final.

Student travel expenses are usually reimbursed by CFA Society Italy.

Obviously, competition is in English, and a good knowledge of the language is necessary for drafting the report and for the exposure during the presentation.
