Tips on Applying for the Residence Permit
Regarding your Residence Permit in Italy: Tips from non-EU applicants
- Your first residence permit will be given as the same period of your visa. For example if you have a visa for 3 months and you paid for a 1 year period residence permit, you will get the permit for only 3 months. Therefore, be smart and do not make your insurance for more than 6 months at the beginning (if you can and if you have your Visa for less than 6 months) and do not apply for 1 year residence permit at the beginning. Wait until you get the first one as your Visa period and then apply for one year. However, if you have your visa for one year, then you can ignore this advice.
- Ask the embassy in your home country as many questions as you need before coming here, they have answers and they speak your language.
- Most of the people working in the Questura do not speak English. Be ready for that.
- Make a copy of all the documents required and keep them with you.
- If you are doing it for the first time, ask the help of the international office and/or Immigration offices. They will tell you if the documents are correct and complete. It will save you some time. They usually speak English in the immigration offices . It is a time consuming and complicated process, therefore asking the help of a professional is important.
- When applying for the residence permit, be ready for a long queue. Maybe you would cancel some plans because you will be late.
- When picking up your residence permit. Usually you receive an SMS with the date and time. Come as the appointment and ignore the queue. Do not do my mistake and wait in the queue because if you have an appointment you can directly enter and how them the SMS.
- There is mainly many Questura that you might be confused about. Ask the tutor which one to go for which reason. For example the place where you apply for the papers is different than picking up the papers and different than doing your finger prints for the first time.
- Make sure you apply for it minimum 2 weeks before its expiry date.
- Keep in mind, after applying for the residence permit via the post, you will be given a Receipt. This receipt is enough for you to travel between Italy and your country (even if your residence permit is expired, in case of renovation). However, you cannot have transit in a country that require usually a Visa for you.
- Issuing a residence permit will require minimum one month since your last meeting (the finger prints). Keep that in mind, especially if you have travel plans.
- You might face some not very nice treatment and impatient employees. Do not take it personal!
