FAQs on GIOCA

Frequently asked questions on the GIOCA Master Program

1. WHAT KIND OF COMMITMENT IS REQUIRED BY GIOCA?
GIOCA is a very intensive program: students are asked to attend several courses and seminars and to take the exams after each course. Students will be given three possibilities to take the examinations.

2. I AM NOT AN ITALIAN CITIZEN NOR A CITIZEN OF THE EUROPEAN UNION. CAN I APPLY?
Yes, you can. You should contact the Italian Consulate/Embassy in your area for information about the procedure for applying to Italian universities. More information for international students is available on the University of Bologna website. Please pay attention to the various requirements of the Italian Embassy in your country for studying abroad. Most deadlines and requirements are established by the central government, therefore there is nothing we can do if students do not abide by these deadlines or if they do not present the correct documents within the deadlines.

3. WHAT TYPE OF STUDENTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for students who have a passion for culture and the arts. Previous experience in the field is encouraged, but not necessary. Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and previous studies, ranging from undergraduate degrees in humanities to social sciences.

4. WHEN DOES THE PROGRAM BEGIN?
Fall term begins mid September while the examinations end on June, 30.

5. WHERE ARE LESSONS HELD?
Lessons are held within the School of Economics and Management of the University of Bologna.

6. IS IT MANDATORY TO ATTEND LESSONS?
Yes, students must attend at least 70% of the course lessons to complete the exam.

7. CAN STUDENTS WORK WHILE ENROLLED IN THE PROGRAM?
Because of the very intensive nature of the GIOCA Program, it may be very hard to attend the courses and to work in the meanwhile. With the mandatory attendance requirement of at least 70%, it is suggested that students who work part-time select only a few courses to attend and complete during each term, thus these students are more likely to graduate later than within the standard two years.
If you have specific needs and wish to extend your period of study and you are aligned to the exam schedule, you may submit a flexible curriculum application to the student administration office. This option allows you to carry out your university career over a longer period of time than normal, while remaining aligned to the exam schedule. More info here

8. WHAT TYPE OF CLASS SCHEDULE CAN BE EXPECTED?
The course is a rigorous full-time Program. Classes are usually held Monday-Friday, during the afternoon (1-7pm) for the first year and in the morning for the second year (8am-1pm).

9. DOES MY BACHELOR DEGREE HAVE TO BE IN THE FIELD OF BUSINESS?
No, it does not. We are interested in creating a class with a variety of interests, thus it does not necessarily mean they come from a business background.

10. IS CAMPUS HOUSING AVAILABLE?
The university residences, information services and all the housing opportunities for students away from home can be found on this page.

11. DO STUDENTS HAVE TO ACCOMPLISH AN INTERNSHIP PERIOD?
Yes, they have. Students are required to complete a full-time internship during the last semester of the Program. The internships can take place in Italy or abroad.

12. ARE THERE ANY OPPORTUNITIES TO STUDY ABROAD?
Yes, the GIOCA Program has an exchange agreement with the Master of Arts Management at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA, another one with the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing as well as total-matching Erasmus agreements with Universities in Barcelona, Copenaghen, Hamburg and Paris.

13. I AM A STUDENT WITH A DEGREE FROM A UNIVERSITY OUTSIDE OF ITALY/OUTSIDE OF THE EU, HOW DO I KNOW IF I MEET THE REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY?
It is important at you contact your Italian consulate immediately for information on how to attain the certification of original academic documents and declaration of value of your degree and a translated transcript of your courses. Pay attention to the application deadlines you can find at the admission process web page.

14. HOW MUCH DOES THE PROGRAM COST PER YEAR? ARE THERE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE?

The tuition fees for students enrolling in the first year  depend on each student situation (income-based reduction scheme). Please check this page to check the amount, deadlines and payment methods for students who enrol on a Degree Programme at the University of Bologna in the first year or subsequent years.
