Il Cinema Ritrovato, the biggest international festival in Bologna
Promoted by the Cineteca di Bologna, the 37th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato took place at the end of June 2023. The festival is often called the “cinéphiles’ heaven” by a vast community of people involved in studying and protecting film heritage. It has become a well-established event for archivists, restorers, historians, movie fans and film professionals in general, bringing over 4,761 guests from 66 countries and an increasingly younger audience. The screenings of 474 films were attended by more than 155,000 spectators. One of the main reasons for its success is undoubtedly the evening screenings in Piazza Maggiore where an audience of around 7,000 people watch films on the big screen. Guests included important personalities such as Wim Wenders, Joe Dante, Ruben Őstlund, Nan Goldin, Luca Guadagnino, Thelma Schoonmaker, Thierry Frémaux, and many others. The next edition will take place from June 22nd to June 30th 2024.

The lecture will present many aspects of the practical organization of a film festival. Most of them are the same for any cultural event.
On Tuesday March 5th, from 15 to 18, Lecture 1
The lecture will start with a general overview of the Cineteca di Bologna, one of the most important cultural institutions in town. The daily programmes of Cinema Modernissimo and Lumière and the festival Il Cinema Ritrovato are the visible part of the iceberg. We will unveil plenty of other projects and website resources. https://cinetecadibologna.it/
We will build together a mini festival dedicated to film history, selecting 10 films to be screened in 5 days in the presence of 3 guests. It will be done “live” with the excel instruments specifically developed for sharing film selection and programming. A special attention will be dedicated to the timing of a cultural project workflow, both in the creative process and the staff management.
On Wednesday March 6th, from 15 to 18, Lecture 2
We will build together a real budget with a dedicated excel file, with all the necessary costs and possible funding resources. The goal is to reach a sustainable budget for possible financiers or sponsors.
On Thursday March 21st, from 13 to 16, Lecture 3, aula filopanti
The final lecture will propose an overview of the festival funding on different levels: local funding, private sponsors, regional and national funding requests, with their specific timing. And the Creative MEDIA funding from the European Community, with all the necessary conditions to fulfil. With a special attention to a greener event as well. We will finish with an open discussion.
On Friday March 22nd, from 10 to 11, a guided visit in English
Appointment at the entrance of the Biblioteca Renzo Renzi in Piazzetta Pasolini 3/B (next to Cinema Lumière) for one hour guided tour
