TIDE project

TIDE Project is the project that TEaM is carrying out about internships

TiDE - Project of Career Orientation

The TidE project (Tirocini d'Eccellenza - Internships of Excellence) is born in 2015 within the Second Cycle Degree in Tourism conomics and Management

https://corsi.unibo.it/2cycle/team (TEaM).

TEaM is a two-year degree (equivalent to an M.A. / M.Sc) offered by the University of Bologna.

Our degree is entirely taught in English and its aim is to prepare managers and professionals able to tackle the global challenges of contemporary tourism, being at the same time engine of economic growth, key-player of sustainable development, and promoter of the cultural heritage.

In TEaM learning structure, internships can be activated by public bodies, destination management organizations and private companies that are leaders in their market segments.

Although the Internship is not compulsory in the Study Plan, TEaM is carrying out a project of career orientation and skill matching with tourism companies. The project, , is composed of three steps, which are fully explained here.

As a first step, students are invited to attend the crash course of "Job Placement in the Tourism Sector", taught this year by Dr. Ferdinandi, in the first semester. On the basis of the final evaluation of this activity, a limited number of students (around 15-20) is selected to carry out the second step of the project: in this step, students undergo an interview, in order to define skills, abilities, competencies and career goals of the students. The goal of the second step is to prepare a global evaluation form for each of the students.

This personal form is then used in the third step of the project, that is, the process of selecting a company which would suit the student's skills / competencies / career goals and which will host the student for the internship.

55 TidE internships have taken place, in particular:

  • 25 internships have taken place in Rimini
  • 8 internships have taken place in other Italian cities: Cesena, Rome, Bologna, Vignola, Sorrento, Modena, Verona and Cortina D'Ampezzo have been the predilected cities by TidE Students.
  • 22 TidE students have decided to spend their internship abroad, in particular in: Germany, France, Holland, Luxembourg, Malta, Spain, Sweden and UK.

Some curiosities:

  1. 15% of TidE students is still working in the companies where they did their TidE internships or had the opportunity to go on with a collaboration
  2. 25 % of the students selected in the project decided to have more than one TidE internship
  3. TEAM alumni who have carried out their TidE internships in Italy or abroad are currently working for organizations and prestigious companies such as:

                   World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)

European Institute of Cultural Routes – Luxembourg

                   GoUnesco

                   Expedia Group

                   Alpitur

                   Hilton Hotels

                  Huawei Enterprise Italia

What students say about their TidE Experience:

Anna Khaduri - TidE at Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria Hotel *****:

"If you guys ever get a chance to participate in TIDE project please give it a go! The project is very well-organized and the tutors will make your wishes come true! In my case, I've got even more than I had requested.  My internship was in Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria hotel and I still believe it was my "one-way ticket to the blues". Concerning the hotel, it is an absolute luxury in every detail. So you gotta be strong, determinate and do not give up cause the expectations are extremely high. And you always have in mind that you represent the University of Bologna. Today, 2 years later, I am in Como working for another Hilton hotel. What do I wanna say? It works! Do your best, "make it right" as Hilton policy says and you are on board."

Marco Romagnoli – TidE at EICR and La rotta dei Fenici:

"I was selected for the TIdE project at its very first edition in 2014 and had the opportunity to put the project potential into practice with a three-month internship at the European Institute of Cultural Routes (EICR) in Luxembourg in 2016. During my internship, I fulfilled a varied number of tasks, from drafting conference speeches to monitoring the conformity criteria of the Cultural Routes. The work environment was as relaxed as efficient and It was a pleasure to coordinate the workload with my colleagues who always demonstrated high professionalism making me feel as part of the team. Thanks to the internship period, I learnt how to understand the complexity of a technical agency dealing with different stakeholders, from Cultural Routes to European and non-European member States, and the university network (the CAST of Rimini is a full member). The TIdE project members highly helped and advised me along the company selection, and I would recommend such a professional and personal experience to my university colleagues!"

Giorgia Italiano – TidE in Booking.com:

"The TIDE project gave me a great opportunity.
After my graduation I did an interview for a famous company internationally recognized:  Booking.com.
After the interview i had the opportunity to start my post graduation Stage for 6 months in their office located in Rimini.
The Stage has been very educational and i had the chance to work in a company which is the leader in the OTA and tourism field. I have increased my communication and marketing skills and consolidated my knowledge of the tourism market.
Booking.com is a friendly and open minded company that gives you the opportunity to express your ideas and creativity.
Since the beginning i had been assigned a Tutor who supported my internship for the whole period.
Also my Manager, Claudia, was always available and ready to help me and give me advices.
I would suggest Booking.com to everybody that wants to increase knowledge in the tourism and web marketing field. I really think that is one of the few company in which meritocracy still exists.
The bottom up structure of the company permits to everybody, in the same way, to express new ideas and develop projects to achieve goals."

Giulia De Moliner - TidE at ENIT Madrid:

"My experience in Madrid by the Italian National Tourist Board (ENIT) was absolutely incredible. I spent here three months from March until May 2018 and I firstly started working in the information point, where I provided information about Italy to the Spanish people. Later I collaborated with the marketing department, where I helped my colleagues in organizing some big events such the Mutua Madrid Open, one of the most important tennis tournaments in the world. I participated with the office to some workshops and presentations, I learned many things about destination marketing, I started my final dissertation and I learned a lot about my beautiful country.  Actually I can speak another language and I know more about the tourism field. But what I will remember for life are the fantastic people I met here, who have helped me from the first day and have taught me many things. They have become without doubt true friends."

Evelina Del Prete - TidE at ROSEATE HOTEL in London:

" My experience with TIDE Project has been very satisfying from the beginning to the end. The crash course of Professor Ferdinandi is very interesting and unusual and it has been very worth to attend it regardless that you may or may not be selected for the project in the end.

Afterview, the interview with the Professor has been very useful in order to get an idea of which sector of the tourism industry could better fit my interests and skills, in order to later on look for an appropriate internship thanks to the help of the Tutor, Dr Ichraq Naji.

She got in contact with several companies in order to find the one for me and her mediation was fundamental for me to finally get the chance of carrying an internship in the Front of House department at the Roseate House London, an English luxury boutique hotel, formerly called The Royal Park. The Hotel, together with other two properties in the UK and three more in India, is part of “The Roseate” urban luxury resort brand, by the Bird Group, an India’s business conglomerates with interests in Travel Technology, Aviation Service, Hospitality, Luxury Retail and Education.

The internship was mainly focus on the Guest Relationship Management, as I was everyday working together with the Front Desk Agents, the Concierge, the Duty Managers and The Reservation team. I had the chance to have a full overview of the hotel organization, to be trained on the Hotel PMS (Sihot) and most of all to deal with the guest service procedures. This has led me to improve my communication and responsability skills and to introduce myself in a multicultural and dynamic working environment in a city like London.
I am, for this reason, very grateful to the University of Bologna to have had the chance of being part of this project, as I believe the whole experience has been beneficial for my prospective career."

Francesco Corte Colò - TidE in Cortina Marketing Se.Am:

"I did my internship at Cortina Marketing, the tourism board of the Alpine destination Cortina d’Ampezzo. It was a 2 month, full time and very intense experience. Cortina Marketing is a small organization aiming at enhancing the knowledge and visibility of Cortina as a tourism destination as well as at facilitating the meeting of tourism demand with local supply and supporting local businesses and events that take place in town. The internship was a chance to start building first-hand knowledge of destination promotion in different ways. I performed several tasks, from the easier ones to some more challenging. I highly appreciated being involved in discussions and decisions, and always felt that my point of view as a fresh student was taken into account. A few months after the internship, I had the chance to start working for Cortina Marketing, that is now in a phase of redefining its strategy, organisation and goals for the next three years. The job is challenging and requires multiple skills, but on the other hand that’s what makes it interesting. I never have time to get bored as I deal with different matters and a great plus is that I travel a lot for tourism fairs and meetings. All in all, I am very glad the internship gave me the chance to set foot in the business and start knowing it and ultimately to start off my career at Cortina Marketing."

Paolo Baraldi - TidE in Vacanzattiva:

"My Tide internship has been a great time at Vacanzattiva, a network providing outdoor tourism experiences all over Italy. It's a startup and this means I could immediately get into the game! After two weeks I was already an exhibitor at Ttg Incontri in Rimini and during the stage I could learn a lot, being involved in many different activities. I believe that it has been a special entry to the business world, because I could develop a broader perspective and an open-minded view. After 3 years of personal and professional growth, I'm still here, as project coordinator. During this time, because of my job, I had the chance to see amazing best practices of destination marketing, to meet with inspiring tourism professionals and to improve my knowledge of tourism market and its new trends."
