Curricular internships are learning activities that allow students to obtain credits contemplated in the course structure diagram of their degree programme, which also allow to acquire practical skills and make initial contact with the world of work.
Internships are carried out on the basis of an agreement between the University of Bologna and the host structure (company, public body, professional firm etc.) and an internship programme signed by the parties concerned.
Students are eligible for internships, which must be carried out as part of their degree programme. For this Course Internship is a mandatory earning activity.
Students can present the request for curricular internship in the period established by their study plan; in particular, second year students can start an internship after the end of the second semester.
Unless otherwise established by national or European regulations, internships normally have a duration of 25 hours for every University educational credit assigned to them in the course structure diagram for the degree programme. Internships must be completed within 12 months of their start date. Please check in your study plan the duration.
Internships may be carried out in University structures or externally, either in Italy or abroad.
To choose where to carry out the internship, you can consult the list of structures that hold agreements with the University and/or internship offers already published on Tirocini online.
If none of the offers meet your interest, you can present a spontaneous application and, if approved, ask the Structure to publish an offer addressed to you (known as “ad personam” offer), via the University's internship application. If the Host Structure does not already have an agreement with the University, you must ask the structure to draw up the agreement with the University of Bologna by registering at https://aziende.unibo.it and, once it has been stipulated, the internship administrative procedure can start.
Students can request an internship solely via the Tirocini online application.
Once you have identified the structure in which you wish to carry out the internship, you need to agree with the Host Contact Person, your learning objectives and activities, the time lines to achieve them and all the other details required to complete the internship programme.
The application must be submitted and accepted by the Company, at least 10 working days before the beginning of the internship, in order to check and approve the required documents (in August you should consider 20 working days in advance).
The internship program must be completed by the Company, then you will receive an e-mail where you are asked to accept or deny or change the internship programme. Only after this step the internship request is finalized.
NB: Before starting the internship, you have to complete the Health and Safety Training Courses (Module 1 and Module 2).
If you have already a safety certification - Module 1 - obtained outside of the University, you must upload the certificate of general training obtained from other organisations or companies to the “Safety Course Exemption” section on Studenti Online (SOL). The safety certification - Module 2 - must necessarily be obtained by the University of Bologna.
PLEASE NOTE:
Applications will be submitted to the competent Internship Committee, which must authorise their activation. Students must download their attendance register before commencing their Internship.
The Internship can be carried out in the period in between the start and end dates shown on the attendance register.
During the internship, you must keep in contact with your University Tutor for any support or advice you may need on how to carry out your activities, and you must record your daily activities in the attendance register.
The Internship hours must be recorded during the period between the start and end dates shown on the attendance register.
Before leaving the Host Structure, make sure that the attendance register is countersigned by the Host Contact Person.

If you intend to withdraw from or interrupt your internship for reasons that do not allow further continuation, you must notify the office below, stating your reasons to Internship office.
If in the internship period you have to leave due to an exam, for vacation, illness, or other reasons, you must communicate your absence and explain the reason both to the company tutor (contact structure) and the Internship Committee, through written notice to the Office Internship (also by fax or e-mail). Is required to make up the days of absence.
After completing the internship, for it to be validated by the Commissione tirocini, you must:
Fill in, on line, the date of the end of internship;
Upload the Daily booklet (diary) duly completed, stamped and signed in all its parts;
Upload your final report: the student must draw up a report on plain paper, for each period of internship (see facsimile of the Final Report of the Student).
Fill in the assessment questionnaire
We do not accept final reports written by hand or incomplete.
The Internship Office will submit to the Commissione tirocini the final documentation received in the first meeting; the students who have special needs for the timing of the validation of the internship (about to graduate, scholarships, etc.) MUST, first of all, organize their own training taking into account these limits, and, then, inquire EARLY on dates already set for the meetings of the Commission.
If the degree programme teaching regulations allow it, you may request the recognition of a work activity (or an activity comparable to it) that you carried out during the internship
after including the internship in the study plan;
after completing the activity in question (in Italy or abroad);
regardless of whether or not an internship agreement already exists between the Host Structure and the University of Bologna.

The University provides accident and third-party liability insurance coverage for all students undertaking a curricular internship, for the period and at the location(s) specified in the internship programme approved by the Internship Committee through the SOL-Tirocini platform.
Insurance coverage does not extend to travel between the trainee’s permanent or temporary residence and the internship location, regardless of the means of transport used.
If the trainee is required to travel to a location and/or site not included in the approved internship programme, insurance coverage may be extended provided that the trainee submits a prior request by email to the academic supervisor, copying (Cc) the host organization supervisor and the Internship Office. The subject line of the email should read:
“Request for authorization of business travel – FIRST NAME SURNAME, internship at COMPANY/ORGANIZATION”
The body of the email should include:
First name, surname, and student ID number
Name and location of the travel destination
Date and time of travel, if known
Activities to be carried out
Reason for the travel (e.g. site visit, inspection, etc.)
The trainee must wait for authorization from the academic supervisor via email before undertaking the travel.
In the event of an accident, both the Host Organization and the trainee are required to promptly notify the University so that it can carry out the procedures required under the applicable regulations.
For further information, please consult the Insurance Service webpage: https://www.unibo.it/en/study/life-at-university-and-in-the-city/health-and-assistance/insurance
Before applying for an internship abroad, please consult the “Viaggiare Sicuri” website of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to check the safety conditions and entry requirements of your chosen destination country.
The University provides insurance coverage for trainees only in the event of accidents and for third-party liability; health insurance is not included. If you are going to a country that is not covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), before your departure you should verify directly with the Host Organization whether it is also necessary to take out private health insurance for the entire duration of your stay.
You can undertake an internship abroad through one of the following options:
By participating in a mobility programme (e.g. Erasmus+ or calls for applications for thesis research abroad).
By identifying a company or organization abroad, following the same procedures and requirements applicable to internships in Italy.
