Published on 18 January 2023

GRENADA. Friday Jan, 13rd 2023. The ocean navigator Giovanni Soldini, aboard the trimaran Maserati Multi 70 won the RORC Transatlantic race, challenging 20 other boats from the Canary Islands to Grenada. It only took Maserati 5 days, 5 hours 46 minutes to complete the race. 17 hours less than the previous record.
Maserati 70 is the first oceangoing boat to be powered entirely by electricity produced on board by means of photovoltaic panels and stored in a lithium battery. The system was developed by the team led by Prof. Claudio Rossi from DEI, with colleagues Tommaso Maria Brugo and Beatrice Pulvirenti from DIN, together with a group of students, Ph.D. students and research fellows. The University’s spin-off LiBER srl, manufactured the marine battery and the on-board energy management system.

Maserati 70 proved that it is possible to cross the ocean without a single drop of fuel on board and to win the regatta, leaving the runner-up 113 miles behind.
Sustainability through electrification also in sailing and yachting. The energy transition has begun.

Congratulations to the Maserati 70 team for the victory and special thanks to Giovanni Soldini for believing in #UNIBO and #LIBER.
