‘On More-Than-Human Dimension of Research Collaborations and Nyamnin’ Olga Ulturgasheva, Associate Professor of Anthropology, Department of Social Anthropology, Manchester University

07 March 2025 from 12:00 to 14:00

Sala Conferenze (3rd floor), DBC, Via degli Ariani 1, Ravenna - In presence and online event

Abstract: Environmental crises in Arctic regions emphasize the need for synergizing Indigenous
and scientific knowledge to safeguard human and more-than-human lives. This presentation
examines collaborative expertise and strategies to address climate-induced threats, guided by the
Indigenous principle of nyamnin. It advocates symmetrical, reciprocal partnerships that recognize
plural entanglements and embrace more-than-human worlds.

Short biography: Olga Ulturgasheva (she/her) is a Senior Lecturer in Social Anthropology
whose research explores human/non-human personhood, childhood, youth, climate change, and
adaptation in Siberia, the American Arctic, and Amazonia. She has published widely, including
Narrating the Future in Siberia and co-edited volumes Animism in Rainforest and Tundra and Risky
Futures. She has led large, interdisciplinary projects on Arctic Indigenous youth resilience, funded
by the US National Science Foundation, and now serves as Principal Investigator and CoPrincipal Investigator on synergistic research projects supported by the NSF and the European
Research Council. From 2021 to 2022, she was a Pathy Visiting Professor at Princeton
University, and she currently advises as Senior Research Scientist at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks. Her current work, including a forthcoming single-authored monograph and co-edited
volume, examines the latest implications of climate change for more-than-human security,
environmental policy, and the co-production of knowledge.
