Information on how to creat your Study Plan.
What is a Study Plan?
The University’s Study Plan is a list of all the exams (courses) that you have to take in order to graduate. Some exams are mandatory, while others are optional.
If the Study Plan for your first year of enrollment offers a group option in that year (e.g. Final Exam group, optional exams etc.), you must submit the Study Plan during the periods indicated.
You can view your Study Plan in the STUDY section of this website.
Who can present a Study Plan?
Study Plans be can submitted by students correctly enrolled, up-to-date with the payment of university fees and, in the case of an international student, in possession of a valid residence permit.
Study Plans can be submitted and amended only during pre-set periods. After the deadline, the last Study Plan presented will be considered valid and it will no longer be possible to amend.

NOTE: If you are graduating:
If during the 2023/24 academic year you are enrolled in your 2nd year, or if you are a late graduate, you can change your Study Plan only if you complete the enrollment procedure for the 2024/25 academic year by paying your school fees.
If you enrol in the A.Y. 2024/2025, you will not be able to take part to the graduation sessions for the A.Y. 2023/2024; rather, you will have to refer to the graduation sessions for the A.Y. 2024/2025 (that is, starting from June-July 2025).
Log into Students online with your University credentials and go to the “Study Plan - Complete your Study Plan” section. After selecting your options, remember to press "save" so that your Study Plan can be submitted correctly.
We also recommend that you always print a copy of the completed Study Plan. The copy represents the only proof of your submission in the event of formal or substantial irregularities that may arise after uploading.
You can complete your Study Plan online if:
For help with the online completion of your Study Plan, please send an email to the Educational Service Office (distal.didattica@unibo.it) with your institutional address, specifying your Program, your year of enrollment, the problem, and a telephone number in order to contact you.
The form must be correctly and fully completed, and sent by e-mail to the Student Office (segagr@unibo.it), by the deadlines indicated in Submission Periods.
For information on completing the Study Plan on paper, please contact the Student Office by sending an email with your institutional address, by phone, or by going to the office during reception hours.
The form must be completed ONLY in the case of:
Among the CFUs of your Study Plan, you may choose activities from the Optional Courses. Approval times may vary according to the activity chosen.
Approval will be immediate only for the online selection of:
Study Plan approval is subject to authorization of the Program’s Coordinator, or delegate, and to the required technical time necessary, for the choices of:
You will receive feedback via e-mail.
During the “Awaiting approval” period, access to “Web Plans” for amendments is not allowed, however, you can eliminate your submission: Go to: the Unibo home page: Students Online: in the awaiting approval section, click on “see details”: from the window that opens, select “DELETE (upper left). Once you have deleted your submission, you can resubmit another Study Plan in the section “Web Plans”.
Approval is subject to authorization by the Program’s Coordinator, or delegate, and further approval for courses with limited access, by the specific Program, for the choice of:
This request requires the form to be sent to the Student Office (segagr@unibo.it) by the end of the first period. It is possible that you will not see your course(s) until the end of February, so you are invited not to ask the Student Office for information before this deadline. In the event that this request is not approved, you will be contacted by the Student Office.
It is necessary to complete the study plan online in order to insert an alternative course for your request. The alternative course may possibly be deselected in the third period, however, it will not be necessary to give the exam if you have reached the minimum amount of credits for optional courses required by your Program.
Before making your choices, keep in mind that:
- the Optional Courses (indicated in the didactic program as "type D" courses) may change from one year to the next, as they are activated annually. Therefore, if you chose an optional course last year and the course is no longer available in the current year, you can still give the exam by the last available session, or you can remove the course from your Study Plan and insert a new one in the current year. The addition or removal of an optional course can be carried out online several times in the same academic year, but strictly only during the time period for Study Plan submission.
- Hard copy completion of your Study Plan must be carried out only in the above mentioned cases and is subject to different mandatory time periods.
- For Integrated Courses, indicated with (C.I.), and for monodisciplinary courses composed of modules, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO MAKE PARTIAL INSERTIONS. The entire integrated or monodisciplinary course must be indicated (only for PASA students).
- Passing an exam allows you to acquire University Educational Credits (CFU). To graduate, you must accumulate 120 CFUs.
- You can choose courses belonging to either the Undergraduate or Postgraduate Program.
- Your Program foresees a minimum of 8 CFUs optional courses and a maximum of 18 CFUs. To graduate, it is sufficient to have the minimum number of CFUs in your Study Plan. However, you can reach, but not exceed, the 18 CFU limit.
Am I obliged to submit a Study Plan?
Yes, you have to make a selection from your options.
PLEASE NOTE: failure to submit a Study Plan will not allow you sign up and give the exams not indicated in the plan. In particular, in the case of an internship, you will only be able to carry it out if you have included it in the study plan, and in the academic year in which you selected it (this is also in due to the insurance aspects related to the activity).
In particular, students with a first year enrollment in 2019 or later, must use the online modality while late graduating students, enrolled in 2018 or in previous years, must use the hard copy format.
All students enrolled will automatically have all mandatory courses uploaded but not the optional courses. You are therefore invited to periodically consult the STUDY PLAN (based on your first year of enrollment) published on the website of your Program. Carefully read the information given on the web page dedicated to the Study Plans of your Program.
Can I choose any course with the online procedure?
No. You can only choose courses among those in the Web Plan.
If you wish to choose a course with a limited number of participants that belongs to another department of the university, you will need to submit a hard copy Study Plan that will be subject to validation by the Coordinator of your Program and the other Program involved. Only after authorization will the Student Office include it in the Study Plan.
Can I choose parts of courses?
No. Neither with the online procedure nor with the hard copy procedure is it possible to select modules of courses or disciplines belonging to integrated courses (indicated with C.I.).
Is it possible to anticipate courses foreseen in the Study Plan in subsequent academic years, to the current year of enrolment?
No. It is not possible to anticipate courses or exams set in the Study Plan in subsequent academic years, as attendance has not been gained.
Can I give the exam of a course which was deactivated in the years following its insertion?
Yes, if it was a mandatory course, you must give the exam (the exam remains active until all participants have given it). If it was an optional course, you can replace it with another which is active in the academic year of your choice.
How do you complete an online Study Plan?
Students must access Online Students with their University credentials only during the periods in which submissions are allowed. When completing the Plan, it will be possible to view only the activities (courses, seminars, internship activities, etc.) relating to the year you are enrolled in, or the years already attended; i.e., if you are enrolled in the first year you will see only the courses of the first year, if you are enrolled in the second year you will see the first and second year courses, if you are enrolled in the third year you will see the courses of all three years. You will also be able to select the courses present in the optional groups of the Study Plan. When you have satisfied the requirements, a green dot will indicate the selection of the correct group and you can proceed.
What does the flag next to the course mean?
To understand whether or not a course has been included in your Study Plan, a flag must appear in the box next to the information that identifies the course itself (course code, subject code, description of the subject); if there is a flag, then it means that the course is in your Plan, if not, it means that it has not been included, and it can still be chosen by checking it.
Once you have completed your Plan in all its parts (for all the Program’s years on which you can act), with the NEXT button you can access the next page in which all the courses that have become part of your Study Plan, are visible and divided year by year.
At this point the system carries out all the consistency checks required by the regulations and there are two possibilities:
- if your Plan DOES NOT meet the criteria, then an error message appears and the SAVE button is disabled: in this case, you must use the BACK button to review your Plan;
- if, instead, the Plan meets the set criteria, the SAVE button is activated and, by clicking on it, you allow its registration. The application will then confirm the correct saving.
At the end of the procedure, keep a copy (in hard copy or in pdf. format) of your online Study Plan. Saving a copy is the only means of verification in the event of formal or substantial irregularities that could arise within the Study Plan once uploaded to AlmaEsami. Also check that all the choices are correct and present in AlmaEsami because completing the online plan is also important in order to correctly register during the exam sessions available for each course.
Why am I unable to complete the study plan online?
# How do I insert an optional university course with the online procedure? Only for PASA students
On Students Online, in the section Complete your Study Plan, under "Optional Courses", you will find the item "Courses of the Department or of the University that you can select and submit for approval". Within this subgroup, enter the section called “University courses chosen by the university”.
Once you have selected Courses chosen by the University, enter the code or name of the subject you have chosen.
Once the request has been made, its status is "Awaiting approval", so access to the "Web Plans" section is no longer allowed for any changes.
See detailed instructions in the attached file.
# How do I delete an online request awaiting approval? Only for PASA students
It is possible to delete the request from the Students Online home page: go to “file awaiting approval”, select “View details”, from the details window that opens, select “DELETE” (upper left).
After deletion, you can resubmit your Study Plan from the "Web Plans" section.
# Why can't I enter an activity in "University chosen courses"? Only for PASA students
- you are looking at a partial activity, which cannot be entered online or on paper;
- you are looking at an activity that belongs to a Limited Access Course. You can check the type of access to the Program to which the course belongs by looking at the home page of the Program or from this link. If it actually belongs to a Limited Access Course, you must send in an application form to the Student Office only in the first period of presentation of the Study Plans.
When do I have to complete the Study Plan?
The Study Plan must be completed and submitted exclusively during the periods established for each academic year. Furthermore, it is possible to modify your Study Plan, without limitations, until the deadline of each period. Therefore, even if the Study Plan has already been submitted and saved, it can be recovered, modified and presented again within the same period before the deadline. Once the period for submissions has expired, it will no longer be possible to make changes; the last Study Plan submitted will be considered valid.
During second semester, can I change the Study Plan I presented online at the beginning of the year?
Yes, you can. You can add or delete activities of your choice placed in the first or second semester. If you don't intend to make any changes, you don't have to do anything.
Can I replace a course inserted in my Plan in previous years?
Yes, you can replace it with another activity according to the procedures and deadlines set for the presentation of the Study Plan.
Can I change my Study Plan in September if I want to graduate by March of the following year?
No. If you are a third year student enrolled in the 2020/21 academic year, or if you are a late graduate, you can change your Plan only if you enroll in the subsequent academic year, paying the relative fees. If you opt for this possibility, keep in mind that you will not be able to participate in the March 2022 graduation session (last session of the 2020/21 academic year) therefore, you will be able to graduate starting June 2022 (first session of the 2021/22 academic year).
I have already submitted my Study Plan online and the submission deadline has not yet expired, can I still change it?
Yes. The Study Plan can be modified as much as needed during the completion periods.
How much time must pass between submitting the Plan and being able to register for exams?
If the plan is submitted online and you have not selected courses that need to be approved by the Coordinator, or delegate, the plan is automatically approved and you can immediately register for the exams.
If the plan is submitted online and you have selected courses that need to be approved by the Coordinator, or delegate, you must wait for approval. You will receive an email notification with the outcome of your request. After a positive outcome, you can register for the selected exams.
If the plan has been submitted in hard copy, it is necessary to wait for approval from the Program Board and the manual uploading of the courses by the Student Office.
How long does it take for courses belonging to other University Programs to be approved in my Study Plan?
Approval IS NOT IMMEDIATE, it is subject to the authorization of your Program Coordinator, or delegate, and the necessary technical time.
If the course you want to attend belongs to a Limited Access Course, you must make a hard copy request and wait for the additional approval of the Program council to which the course belongs.
What can I do if I have an urgent need to include an Internship or other activity to be recorded, and I would also like to choose other activities subject to approval?
If you need to immediately insert an activity that does not require approval in your Study Plan (e.g. an internship in order to start the procedure, or a transversal course that has a limited number of participants), you can proceed in doing a two-step completion of the online Plan:
In this manner, you will have your option inserted in the event that the Plan is not approved, and you can proceed with the activation of the internship or register for the chosen exams.
In order to obtain your degree, verification of the minimum amount of optional CFUs will be carried out (minimum number of CFUs range is indicated in the brackets of the group in which you can insert them), regardless of the number of exams you have included in your Study Plan.
Can I add courses under “extra credits”?
Yes, but there is a limit to the maximum number of credits that can be added to your Study Plan and it is the maximum number of credits in the range indicated in brackets in the group in which you can enter them (for example, if the range is 12-18 the maximum number of credits is 18).
Are the marks obtained in the extra credit exams used to calculate my average?
Yes, the grades of all exams given contribute to the calculation of the average before your Final Exam, with the exception of pass/fail exams and the recognition of courses given in previous careers (RC).
If I have too many credits included in my optional courses, am I obliged to give the exams?
No, the important thing is that you have met all the mandatory requirements and respected the option groups of your Plan. The credits in excess of the total required, 180 (for the Bachelor's Degrees) or 120 (for the Master's Degrees) including the Final Exam, if not taken, will be deleted after you have submitted a graduation application when the requirements are checked.
I will be carrying out a period of study abroad (Erasmus, Overseas ...). Do I have to submit a Study Plan?
Yes, submit your Study Plan by entering the courses you would like to have recognized in order to be able to include them in your Learning Agreement. The recognition of the activities carried out abroad will in any case modify the Study Plan presented by replacing the Italian activities with those carried out abroad.
I will be studying abroad (Erasmus, Overseas ...), is there something I should do when I return?
Carry out the administrative procedures set out in the call for applications by completing the application for Recognition on Students Online as soon as possible.
If you return close to graduation, all the procedures must be completed by the deadline for Meeting the Requirements for your graduation application, otherwise you will be able to graduate only in the subsequent session. Inform the International Mobility Office of your urgency, taking into account that administrative activities sometimes have tight technical times.
I am interested in more than one course in a mandatory group, how can I add them to the study plan?
You can add the course by searching for it in the group "Optional Courses on …” or "Course chosen by the University" among the "Educational activities chosen by the student", even if the "Mandatory Group" and the "Optional Courses" are offered in different years.
A total of 25 CFUs must be included in your Study Plan for the final exam. These 25 credits can be inserted as a single choice or by summing together 13 credits for the final exam preparation and 12 credits for the final exam itself, as specified in the following points:
1. In the event that the final exam requires a continuous presence in an external structure(institution or company), the following internship options are established in preparation for the final examination:
The Original Experimental Thesis (13 CFU) must be added to reach a total 25 CFUs. The choice of Internship For Preparation Of The Final Examination foresees Internship activation according to the procedures displayed in this website at the section STUDYING > Internship.
2. In the event that final exam preparation is carried out abroad during an international mobility period (with the Call “Thesis Abroad” or with Erasmus+ Study), the option Preparation For The Final Examination Abroad (12 CFU) is foreseen.
The FINAL EXAM L (12 CFU) must be added to reach a total 25 CFUs.
This option requires the identification of a contact person belonging to the foreign university structure responsible for the collaboration, and documented insurance coverage. Registration of the Original Experimental Thesis (12 CFU) will be carried out by the Degree Program Coordinator, upon endorsement by your thesis Supervisor.
3. In any other case, and if you intend to agree with your Supervisor a thesis that does not require the activation of an Internship nor activities abroad, the option Original Experimental Thesis (25 CFU) must be chosen.
