5702 - International Politics and Economics


The objective of the second-cycle degree programme in International Politics and Economics is to train professionals working at the crossroads of political science and international economics, who are capable of understanding and analysing political, economic and global governance matters in a comprehensive manner. The degree programme places special emphasis on the study of companies in the global political context and of international markets. The cultural andprofessional profile to be formed is, accordingly, that of specialists who understands the international political, financial and economic architecture and, at the same time, are able to operate successfully within companies active in international markets, partly as a result of the specific business finance and international management skills developed.

These professional skills are displayed by: specialists in economic policies and international finance; foreign trade relations officers; political risk specialists.

In order to satisfy the learning needs common to these profiles, the degree programme envisages a curriculum that is structured with certain obligatory course units in political science,statistical-economics and management, as preparation for the specialist course units. In turn, the latter provide synergistic skills deriving from the study of markets and international relations between countries and geographical areas. The second-cycle degree programme also adds the skills needed to carry out empirical analyses of political, economic, financial and social phenomena at an international level.

Accordingly,the course units comprising the curriculum can be grouped into three macro-areas of learning that provide the essential elements of thes kills needed for the professional roles identified. The first area relates to International Economics. The knowledge and skills provided in this area relate to the functioning of the international markets and large international organisations that governing economic relations between States. The second area of learning relates to International Politics. The knowledge and skills provided in this area relate to understanding the global political context, policy anddecision-making systems and international policies with regard to the environment, competition, welfare, migration and security. Lastly, the third area of learning related tothe Inter-disciplinary Analysisof Markets. This area encompasses all the course units offered by thedegree programme that result in acquisition of the knowledge and skills needed to gather, understand and analyse the data and information necessary in order to operate in international markets.
