8060 - Interpreting

Specific learning outcomes

The post-graduate Master's degree programme inInterpreting aims to train professional interpreters skilled in handlinginter-linguistic/intercultural oral communication in the fields of: politicsand institutions, economics and law, science and technology. Such skills willbe applicable in Italian and international institutions, and in the freelancemarket.

More specifically, graduates in Interpreting willpossess the following skills and competencies:

- a high level of competence in conference interpretingin a wide variety of advanced settings (business, social, academic, etc.),involving both verbal and media-assisted communication; using conventionallanguages and, in some cases, the sign language. As well as interpreting,students will also be called upon to write and adapt interlinguistic andintercultural texts to a professional level;

- a high degree ofcultural and linguistic expertise in the two languages studied as applied totexts and discourse;

- in-depth knowledge ofspecialist vocabulary and its semantic contexts;

- a thorough grounding in the theory and techniques ofsingle-speaker and multiple-speaker interpretation;

- the ability to use thestandard technological and communication tools of the interpreting profession,as well as online/offline research tools in order to compile linguisticcorpora, glossaries and terminologicaldatabases;

- the ability to use moregeneral digital and non-digital research tools;

- the ability to devise,manage and monitor joint interpreting projects where a group of people pooltogether their linguistic and operative expertise;

- the capacity for critical thought and self-criticalreflection and an awareness of current professional codes of conduct.

In line with these goals, the Master's degree programmeincludes: in-depth study of the principles of interpreting; exercises toperfect the command of Italian and the other languages chosen for study;exercises to help acquire the various techniques of interpretation; activitiesto learn how to make stylistic choices and discourse analysis in its variousmodes; exercises to practise research techniques.
