6720 - Mechanical Engineering for Sustainability
PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
Mechanical Engineer Specialized in Industrial Sustainability
ROLE IN A WORK CONTEXT
The Mechanical Engineer specialized in industrial sustainability develops expertise across various sectors, becoming a highly qualified expert and/or manager in areas including:
functional and structural design through the use of innovative and sustainable materials and processes, advanced modeling and virtual simulation, including tools such as digital twin and virtual commissioning;
industrial design, virtual and physical prototyping, and engineering of sustainable products;
management and control of mechanical, thermal, industrial, and tertiary-sector plants, through the adoption of advanced data management tools for optimizing industrial sustainability;
modeling, control, and testing of fluid machinery, propulsion systems, energy conversion systems, and hydraulic systems, with the aim of maximizing efficiency and sustainability;
functional design oriented toward industrial automation, using machine learning techniques in the direction of smart manufacturing;
technological processes and production systems, with possible application of digital twin tools for implementing smart manufacturing;
assessment and quantification of the sustainability of products and processes, including through big data and smart data analysis tools.
SKILLS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ROLE
Main competencies include:
the ability to conceive the entire production system, from product design to the management of complex plants, in compliance with environmental, economic, and social sustainability principles;
the ability to design mechanical components, machines, plants, products, and processes in an innovative and sustainable way from functional, structural, and manufacturing perspectives;
the ability to plan and control production reliability and quality, while ensuring innovation and market positioning of sustainable and technologically advanced products;
the ability to design, implement, test, and manage major conventional and non-conventional plants, handling logistics, resource management, and production and process optimization, while ensuring process sustainability;
the ability to design, produce, and manage innovative thermal systems, energy conversion systems, and propulsion systems (including experimental ones), ensuring sustainable resource use;
the ability to analyze and optimize, also from the perspective of industrial sustainability, the operation and management of automated machines and robots used in manufacturing;
the ability to analyze and manage complex manufacturing systems, competently selecting materials and heat treatments, evaluating costs and sustainability, and introducing appropriate innovations in processes, equipment, and production systems;
the ability to hold positions of responsibility in design, management, coordination, and development of industrial and/or research activities, integrating sustainability as a core principle in product and process design;
the ability to assume responsibility in Research and Development departments, conducting experimentation on highly complex components or systems, using non-conventional measurement tools and advanced simulation and virtualization methods to support the development of sustainable technologies.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The professional profile of the Mechanical Engineer offers employment opportunities both in Italy and abroad—also thanks to the delivery of the program in English—primarily in manufacturing and service companies, public administrations, and in independent professional practice.
Main career opportunities include:
mechanical industries;
automation and robotics industries;
electromechanical industries;
manufacturing industries in general;
companies involved in the design, production, installation, testing, and management of machines, transportation systems, production lines and departments, plants, and complex systems;
plant engineering companies;
companies and institutions operating in energy conversion;
companies and institutions involved in waste management and recycling;
consulting firms.
The competencies provided by the degree in Mechanical Engineering are highly valued not only in the mechanical industry but also in broader technological sectors, such as electrical and electronic industries, energy and resource management, and the food industry.
