Final exam: dates and instructions

The final exam consists of writing a dissertation on a subject pertinent to your studies, elaborated in an original way, under the guidance of a supervisor. The dissertation will be discussed publicly during a session in front of a Committee.
During the dissertation discussion, you may use a presentation and the Committee may ask you in-depth questions on methods, results or any developments of your work.

Instructions for the oral presentation

• The presentation should be divided into the following sections:
  • conceptual or theoretical framework, previous studies/findings;
  • aim and objectives of your thesis;
  • study design, measures, type of participants and organisations, statistical analyses;
  • results;
  • discussion and implications.
• Prepare and rehearse the speech beforehand to feel confident and not to violate the time limit (20 minutes including Q&A).
• Speak slowly, clearly and loudly.
• Do not spend too much time in the theoretical introduction, ensure the proper time to show the main findings and implications of your study.
• Use bullet points to summarise key points.
• Avoid cluttering the slides as it may look messy and unclear. Avoid putting too much text on a slide.
• Do not use videos or distracting animations.
• Avoid reading from the visual aid.
• The audience should not be trying to read and listen at the same time - use visual aids to highlight your points.
• Text and background colours should increase readability (dark text on white background).
• The minimum font size should be 24 points for the main text. It can be lower for references or statistical values.
• Research hypotheses are statements, not questions. If necessary, distinguish between H1a and H1b if they are two facets of the same hypothesis.
• Make sure you show the values of statistical tests (e.g., F, t, r), p-value or confidence intervals, and effect size.
• Images can be helpful to describe the work setting, the procedure of the study or the use of any technology or equipment related to the research.
• Include references in brackets following APA format (Author, Year).
• Do not close your presentation with limitations of your work but with future developments or with practical or theoretical implications.
• Do not insert a slide with all the references at the end.
• Do not insert a slide "Thank you for your attention".
• Do not insert the UNIBO logo on the presentation.
