Entry requirements
In order to enroll in the Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence, you need to (1) submit an online application (scroll down to read how to apply correctly!), (2) fill in the mandatory form, and obtain a positive evaluation.
Applicants should comply with the regulations specified in the call for admissions.
Applications are evaluated by the Board of the Degree Programme (Consiglio di Corso di Studio) based on: satisfaction of curriculum requirements; adequacy of academic preparation; fulfillment of language requirements.
Curriculum requirements
The minimum graduate admission requirement is a three-year bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Applied Informatics, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Automation, Electronics, Telecommunications, or Biomedical Engineering, gained through the acquisition of at least 180 ECTS credits, or foreign equivalent.
Please, check the above section "General information on admission requirements" to get further details on eligible degree classes (Italian system).
Candidates who don't hold a bachelor's degree yet, but expect to graduate in the current academic year, must exhibit a transcript of record showing that they have obtained at least 150 credits (CFU/ECTS). Applications with transcripts of record with less than 150 CFU/ECTS will not be evaluated.
University degrees obtained from foreign universities are subject to the same criteria.
Adequacy of the academic preparation
The Admission Board (AB) appointed by the Board of the Degree Programme evaluates the academic preparation of each candidate meeting the curriculum requirements.
Candidates with a graduation grade equal to 110/110 or foreign equivalent are deemed adequate, independently of the number of credits obtained in computer science subjects.
Candidates with a graduation grade lower than 110/110 or foreign equivalent, or for whom a graduation grade is not available, are evaluated based on two indicators:
- an academic performance indicator (API);
- a computer science credits indicator (CSCI).
Academic Performance Indicator (API)
The API is determined as follows:
- for candidates without a graduation grade: the API is equal to the CGPA (in Italian: media ponderata degli esami di profitto), converted to a 30-point scale, and increased by 0.25 points;
- for candidates with a graduation grade: the API is the weighted average between the CGPA (2/3) and the graduation grade (1/3), converted to a 30-point scale.
For example:
- CGPA: 25.75/30, not graduated => API: 26
- CGPA: 25.02/30, graduation grade: 97/110 => API: 25.5
The AB makes the conversion between different grade scales by taking into consideration the evaluation methods and international reputation of the institution awarding the academic degree.
Computer Science Credits Indicator (CSCI)
The CSCI is the number of credits obtained in computer science disciplines (CFU/ECTS) during the bachelor's degree. For Italian degrees, this corresponds to the sum of all CFUs obtained in subjects indicated in the transcript of record as INF/01 or ING-INF/05. The conversion from different (non-ECTS) credit systems will be made by the AB based on international standards.
Admission thresholds
Candidates who meet the following requirements are deemed to have adequate academic preparation:
- candidates with an API higher than or equal to 26/30 and a CSCI higher than or equal to 18 CFU;
- candidates with an API higher than or equal to 25.5/30 and a CSCI higher than or equal to 48 CFU.
Candidates whose API is lower than 25.50/30 are deemed inadequate.
The applications of candidates with an API higher than or equal to 25.5/30 and CSCI lower than 48 or with an API greater than or equal to 26/30 and CSCI lower than 18 will be evaluated analytically by the Board of the Degree Programme. The evaluation criteria include academic record, extent and relevance of work experience in AI-related areas and applications, and English language skills.
Language requirements
All applicants must provide an International Language Certification demonstrating at least a B2-level English Language Proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
The following certificates are deemed eligible:
- IELTS - International English Testing System (5.5-6.0-6.5);
- TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language (PBT 507-557; CBT 180-217; IBT 80-99);
- Trinity College of London (ISE II);
- Cambridge First Certificate;
- TOEIC - Test of English for International Communication (SLP 2222: listening 400 pts; reading 385 pts; speaking 160 pts; writing 150 pts);
- PTE Academic (51-65);
- Idoneità curriculare B2 level from the University of Bologna Language Centre (CLA-UNIBO), or other Italian Universities Language Centre.
English proficiency certificates or MOI certificates released by foreign universities are not admissible.
You do not need to prove your knowledge of English if you've completed an academic degree in or you are a national of one of the following countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, UK, USA.
No Italian proficiency test is required.
Application procedure
In order to apply, please read carefully the application procedure attached on this page (top right column), follow the instructions about how to apply, and submit all the required documents.
After you have completed your application on Studenti Online, to finalize your application o the master's degree you must fill in the online form available at https://forms.office.com/e/UCFWGtNMfn which is a mandatory part of the application. Candidates who hold multiple degrees are requested to only enter in the form the data of the degree that they consider most relevant to the application.
BE AWARE THAT, IN ORDER TO FILL IN THE MANDATORY FORM, YOU HAVE TO CREATE BEFORE A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT, IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT ALREADY, BY FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
- register/ login to a Microsoft account with your Unibo credentials
- go to the form and fill in it
The AB will compare the data with the information in the submitted documents. Applications with incomplete documentation, missing data, or data inconsistent with the documentation, will be desk-rejected.
The AB will also evaluate the following optional documents:
- recommendation letters;
- personal statement of motivation (see attachments).
Results will be published on StudentiOnline and sent by email too. If the evaluation made by the AB is successful, the application light will turn green, otherwise, it will turn red.
Exams syllabus and academic title
The exams syllabus - which is an optional document according to the "Call for applications" - is recommended for this degree.
The exams syllabus is a brief description of the contents of the main exams given throughout the Applicant's bachelor degree. if the bachelor university does not provide such a document, the Applicant may write it down on their own (for instance by using the information on the university's website).
When sending off your application, you will be able to complete the field "Courses taken abroad – foreign academic title". It must be noted there is no need to enter each exams taken, which are already set forth on the transcript of records: just enter the name of your Bachelor degree and your CGPA as well as the minumum and maximum CGPA according to the education system you graduated from.
Enrolment procedure
If your evaluation is successful, please check the call for applicants to know how to enroll.
NOTICE that to complete the enrolment procedure, you also need to choose the class of your master's degree. This can be either INFORMATICA (computer science, LM-18) or INGEGNERIA INFORMATICA (computer systems engineering, LM-32).
Please, be aware that you are only allowed to make or modify your choice as you enroll, or at the beginning of the 2nd year. It is not possible to modify your choice at other moments.
Your choice only determines the name of the degree displayed in your final graduation certificate (corresponding to MSc or MEng). It has no effect on your learning activities since there is only one course structure.
