Final examination: modalities

To graduate, you have to sit a final examination designed to verify that you have reached the education objectives set by the Degree Programme.

Master Thesis

Students should refer to the Eu-HEM Master Thesis Guidelines, sent every year before summer.

Degree Grade Calculation

  • The degree mark is calculated on a scale out of 110.
  • Each student accesses the final examination with a starting grade, calculated on the weighted average of the marks obtained in all the exams. Therefore, each student at the defence date will already have a certain amount of points out of 110, i.e. the beginning grade might be 105/110.
  • To this beginning grade a maximum of 6 points will be awarded by the Examination Board according to the quality of the final examination.
  • The passing grade is 66/110.
  • The maximum grade is 110/110.

Weighted average calculation

  • The weighted average links grades to credits. It is calculated by multiplying each grade to the amount of credits (ECTS) corresponding to that subject. The products are added up and the total is divided by the sum of all the credits.

  • Example of weighed average calculation for 3 subjects
    • Law, Regulation and Planning in Healthcare: Grade 30, ECTS 10
    • Legal Issues in Pharmaceutical Markets: Grade 27, ECTS 5
    • Health Promotion and Policies: Grade 25, ECTS 10

                                          30*10 + 27*5 + 26*10/ /10+5+10)=27,8

Final Grade Calculation

  • The final grade is calculated by summing up the points awarded by the weighted average of all the exams plus the points awarded by the Examination Board.
  • The calculation of the points based on the weighted average is as follows:

                                                          Weighted Average * 110/30

  •  Example:
    • Weighted Average: 27,8
    • Beginning points awarded according to the weighted average:

                                                              27,8*110/30= 101,9

  • Points awarded by the Examination Board: 6
  • Final Graduation Grade: 101,9+6=107,9 =108

Note that the three other partner universities do not attribute a final grade to the whole career. They evaluate the thesis as it was an exam by using their grading systems. The vote attributed to the Master Thesis will form part of your GPA.

Evaluation Criteria

Evaluation criteria of the Master Thesis are shared among the four partner universities and they are based on the ECTS grading system. Each university will convert the mark obtained abroad into local grade (or points attributed to the thesis).

For example: an A of the ECTS grading scale corresponds to 6 points in Bologna or to the grade 1 in Innsbruck or  to the grade 1,5-1 in Oslo.
