The University of Bologna, together with the University of the Algarve, partnered with the University of Cadiz in the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Water and Coastal Management (WACOMA) programme from 2011 to 2017. Since 2017, the University of Bologna has coordinated the Programme, which was again funded by the European Commission. The last intake of students took place in 2020, and the programme closed in July 2022.
The EMJMD WACOMA curriculum has therefore been for 10 years a curriculum of the Master's degree in Environmental Analysis and Management (AGA), based in Ravenna. On the basis of the experience gained in EMJMD, the significant interest of the lecturers and researchers working on the Ravenna Campus in the marine-coastal environment, and the area's strong vocation on these issues, it was decided to maintain the curriculum even after the European funding ended, so from the academic year 2022/2023.
The new Wacoma is completely managed by the University of Bologna, and is created to capitalise on the experience and knowledge gained from previous international experiences.
