Programme enrolment: requirements, deadlines and methods

Application procedure A.Y. 2024/2025

Admission to the Master degree is subject to the assessment of an adequate personal preparation, through the analysis of the student’s educational background and curriculum vitae (as described in the Admission requirements section).

Application to this programme must be submitted only online, by uploading all the required documents on the platform Studenti Online

Refer to the call for admission available on this page: in particular pay attention to the admission general schedule.

Only candidates who demonstrate to meet all the necessary requirements by the application deadline can be admitted. Late or incomplete applications will not be assessed and will be excluded from evaluation.

If you have a foreign qualification, read the specific information before continuing.

If you are a non-EU citizen living outside Italy, you must apply for an entry visa for study purposes at the Italian Embassy in your country and pre-enrol online via the Universitaly portal.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

• pre-enrolment procedure at the Italian Embassy does not grant enrolment to the programme. Your official enrolment will be subject to verification of the authenticity, the accreditation, the level and the academic rights of the qualifications by the Student Administration Office of the University of Bologna, once the original documents have been received.

Candidates, who have not received the Bachelor's certificate yet, are admitted conditionally (sub conditione) and they need to start the online enrolment procedure within the official deadlines, through the Studenti Online platform. Later, they have to provide the necessary documents to the Student administration office (in this regard, please refer to the list of deadlines at the end of this page).

Therefore, candidates admitted sub conditione can legitimately enrol; however, if they do not obtain their Bachelor’s Degree by the aforementioned deadline, their enrolment will be invalidated and their university career cannot be activated. 

Admission requirements

Admission to the Master’s programme is conditioned to specific requirements that are mentioned as follows. Once all the admission requirements have been met, you can proceed with the matriculation.

In order to attend the Master’s Degree programme in Mathematics, candidates must possess university knowledge of Mathematics and Physics.

Assessment of academic and personal preparation is carried out by a specific Admission Board through the evaluation of candidates’ uploaded documents. Candidates should prove they have a deep knowledge of the topics included in the Syllabus.

Candidates with one of the following qualifications and a final grade greater than or equal to 90/110 in one of the  Italian bachelor programs below are considered suitable for admission and matriculation:

• ex D.M. 270: L-35 - Scienze matematiche, L-30 Scienze e tecnologie fisiche;
• D.M. 509/99: 32 – Scienze matematiche, 25 - Scienze e Tecnologie Fisiche;
• Previgente ordinamento quadriennale: Laurea in Matematica, Laurea in Fisica, Laurea in Astronomia.

When these requirements are not met, admission is subject to the assessment of academic and personal preparation carried out by the Admission Board.

The Admission Board will evaluate candidates’ academic curriculum and may require to interview the candidate at its discretion.

A positive outcome of the interview is a necessary condition to be admitted. The Admission Board may also decide to include additional individual learning requirements.

Curriculum Advanced Mathematics for Applications

Intake 1  

Applications can be submitted from 8 March 2024 until 29 April 2024. Any additional interviews will be held MON 6 May at 2.00 pm, Seminar I (Department of Mathematics) or online (Teams platform).

Candidates who must attend the interview will be notified by FRI 30 April.

Intake 2

Applications can be submitted from 30 April 2024 until 9 July 2024. Any additional interviews will be held MON 16 July at 9.30 am online (Teams platform).

Candidates who must attend the interview will be notified by FRI 12 July.

Intake 3

Applications can be submitted from 10 July 2024 until 12 September 2024. Any additional interviews will be held WED 18 September from 2:30pm (Teams platform).

Candidates who must attend the interview will be notified by FRI 13 September.

Candidates’ motivation

Basic mathematics knowledge:

• Notions of limits and continuity for real functions of one or more real variables;
• Differential calculus and integrals in one and several variables;
• Series and sequences of numbers and funtions, and the main criteria of convergence and non convergence;
• Fundamentals of classical mechanics;
• Basic notions of probability;
• Equivalence and order relations;
• Divisibility: Euclid’s algorithm. Prime numbers and Fundamental theorem of arithmetic;
• Polynomials with real coefficients: polynomial long division and irreducible polynomials; polynomials with complex coefficients and fundamental theorem of algebra;
• General knowledge of groups, rings, fields;
• Vector spaces and linear transformations; matrices and linear systems; eigenvalues, eigenvectors and diagonalization of endomorphisms;
• Affine and Euclidean geometry of R^2 ed R^3;
• Conics and quadrics.

Students who will pass the interview will be assigned up to 60 ECTS, which are to be obtained before the enrolment to the following academic year, in order to complete the basic preparation.

PLEASE NOTE:

In order to be eligible for application, candidates must possess:

- at least 12 ECTS in one or more of the following subject groups: FIS/01-FIS/08, INF/01, ING-INF/05, of which at least 6 in FIS/01-FIS/08

- at least 48 CFU in one or more of the following subject groups: MAT/01 - MAT/09 or equivalent for international degree programmes.

The above-mentioned requirements are necessary but, if met, do not automatically grant admission. Admission to the Master’s Degree programme is subject to the evaluation of personal and academic preparation and a possible interview.

Assessment of English language requirements

The English language proficiency at CEFR B2 level is required for the admission. 

Candidates must meet the requirement through of the following options:

1. an international certificate at B2 level among the ones listed here;
2. a first/second cycle degree title in programmes entirely taught in English:the Transcript of records or other documents issued by the University must contain the formal indication that the language of instruction is English;
3. Transcript of records demonstrating a CEFR English B2 exam passed during the first/second cycle programme: valid only if the level of proficiency is clearly stated in the course title (ex: English B2/ Idoneità linguistica di lingua inglese B2, etc.). If the level is not clearly indicated in the course title, a declaration of the level issued by the Professor in charge of the completed course is required;
4. status of English native speakers; 
5. CEFR English B2 certification provided by any Italian University Language Center (CLA) or any other recognized certifying body(valid only if the certificate states the exact name of the body/school/institute issuing the certificate, level obtained and exam date); 
6. Sit an online Oxford English proficiency test provided by UNIBO CLA and get a result no lower than CEFR English B2. 

The test can be sat ONCE ONLY in one of the set dates and it is free of charge. In order to book a test, you need to start the application to the programme and send an email to science.international@unibo.it , specifying the chosen date, before the related deadline.
