IM Class goes to Lombardini: the final real case of Problem Solving

May 2016

IM Class visited Lombardini (Kohler Engines) on May 20. The company, based in Reggio Emilia, manifactures different kind of engines. The visit was organized to conclude with the final project of the course “Problem Solving”: the Company wants to expand its business to China and Mr. Galli, Director of the HR Dep., offered us the possibility to find strategic and reasonable suggestions and solutions to face the big Chinese market.

Of course, the project was challenging and ambitious for all of us. We worked hard for more than one month, struggling to find reliable information about the country, learning new issues which affect the Chinese market, looking for innovative ideas for the company and developing possible strategies, which really impressed the commission, composed by the managers of the different departments (Sales and Purchasing, R&D, Marketing, CFO, HR etc.).

In the morning, we had the chance to visit the plant of the company and all the class was excited for the incredible level of technology, directly in action during the production’s process. Within small groups, we had the chance to talk with each department's director, raising questions, satisfying our curiosities about the Company and the business of engines, in Italy and in the rest of the world.
Now that the course ended, we would like to thank Professor Lelli, that gave us the possibility to put into practice all the theoretical concepts that we've analysed in depth in class many times during this semester, teaching us how to work also practically and how to face concrete issues, presenting real projects in real Companies, obtaining, as first year students, unexpected great results!
