Occupational health and safety - Student obligations (D.Lgs. 81/2008)
Information for Students on Occupational Health and Safety
In accordance with Italian Legislative Decree 81/2008, all students participating in clinical clerkships are required to comply with occupational health and safety regulations. This includes undergoing preliminary medical check-ups and completing mandatory training modules.
Preliminary medical check-ups
What are they?
Students enrolled in the Medicine and Surgery Degree Programme must undergo preliminary medical check-ups at the Occupational Medicine Division, directed by Prof. Violante, located at the S. Orsola-Malpighi Teaching Hospital.
The check-ups include two appointments:
First appointment – Blood test, which includes:

Complete blood count and basic metabolic panel

Serologic testing for immunity to airborne infectious diseases (measles IgG, rubella IgG, mumps IgG, varicella IgG) and bloodborne transmissible diseases (hepatitis B surface antibody [HBsAb], hepatitis C antibody)

IGRA test (QuantiFERON) for tuberculosis
Second appointment – Medical examination
- A physician will evaluate the test results and the student’s immunisation status in order to issue the eligibility certificate, which is mandatory to access clinical clerkships.
Booking information
Preliminary medical checks are scheduled starting from the end of Year 1 and take place at the Occupational Medicine division headed by Prof. Violante, S.Orsola-Malpighi teaching hospital.
BOOKING FOR A.Y. 2024/25: students enrolled in the first year of the course booking opens on 12 May 2025 and closes on 10 June 2025 (or or earlier if all available slots are filled).

Please note that the Ufficio Servizi agli Studenti does not manage the scheduling of medical check-ups and cannot provide support on this matter.
Eligibility certificate
At the end of the medical check-ups, if all requirements are met, the Occupational Medicine Division will issue an eligibility certificate, which is necessary to register for clinical clerkships and TPVs, as required by Legislative Decree 81/2008.
Training modules
While attending clinical clerkships, students are considered workers under Italian occupational health and safety regulations, due to their exposure to specific risks. As such, students must complete mandatory health and safety training, which includes three modules:
Online self-paced courses, to be completed before beginning any hospital-based clerkship. Once completed, the certificate for each module will be available in the “Certificates and Self-Certifications” section of Studenti Online.
In-person attendance is required. A training lecture will be held according to the calendar published on the relevant training page.
